Shu.

That sucks. Surely they have a box of spares with one floating around in it?

It is a 20mm axle for a BoXxer fork, even Cape cycles was out of stock.

I would prefer not to name the shop.

The Rock shox boXxer axle is a special axle that you must loosen 1 side and then on the other side remove it. It was also the first time that they worked on a bike like that

If it was damaged before then its probably a blessing in disguise.

Rather it breaks in the shop than failing on a downhill -being a boxxer and all.

A new axle is going to cost less than a new set of teeth!

I don't think it's fair to expect the LBS to pay. I know it's *** and I'd be bleak as well, but the bottom line is that it was on it's way out. The fact that it was "fully functional" doesn't mean that you could reasonably expect them to work on it without the possibility that they might break it.

If you specifically informed them that you had a dodgy axle and they need to be really careful with it, you'll probably find that they'd say "sure, we'll be careful, but if it breaks then it's not on us".

I'd say you need to foot the bill in this instance. Sorry bud.

Do you service your bike regularly?

Do you give it a major service at least once a year?

Something that's 40% broken cant be 100% functional without a huge amount of risk to YOU.

The LBS have a expenses on your behalf like telephone calls, courier etc etc etc.

You can be gratefull that it finally broke while at the LBS.

So, it's def not a case of them paying nothing.

If it was my bikeshop, you would have paid for everything.

The only mistake they made was promising to pay for it without making sure of ALL the facts at that very moment.

So, don't take chances like this plse - pay up -  they're being more than fair!

I had No idea it was dodgy, you can only see it after it was too late

Firstly, the bike shop needs to prove that they inspected the axle when the part was disassembled, noticed then that the axle is damaged, and advised you accordingly, that there is a potential of failure upon re-assembly. Only then they can not be fully liable.

However,

On the flip side, you cannot expect the bike shop to fit the bill for damaging a previously damaged part, especially if you are aware of said damage.

Personally, I would not ride with a 40% damaged part...specially something as important as a wheel axle.

Too early for friday
