I think one could use a car tire as well - pump to 3 bar and it will have enough volume - question is if you will get enough airflow out of the valve to seal an mtb tire.

Yeah, I have seen people doing this as well and super cheap as all you would need is a long valve like this

There are various cylinders/vessels you can use - some more safe to use than others.

The best (IMO) option I have found is using a scuba diving cylinder and regulator.

YES they are expensive, but they work. Period. You can have these tested annually so that you know you are not transporting a bomb in the car.

Set the 1st stage pressure to suit your tyre pressure and off you go...

A "small" cylinder (Ali) will hold 180-200 bar safely, with +-2700lt of air available.

Jip fill it with Nitrox[emoji23]

Might be able to get my hands on a aircon refill bottle.  Going to try and convert that for the bikes.  Both my GS650 and the cycles can use this.

So just waiting to get my paws on the bottle...  Then the build...  Will help a lot if I can get this done as it is a hell of a task to get the compressor from my dad to Pretoria every time.

Only problem I have is with water in the air....  How do you get rid of it.  Filters?  Of just take it in your stride?

I am using a coke bottle in a usn supplement tin wraped in a SH#T ton of duct tape

It holds 6bar until the clamps that squeeze the pipe close can't handle it anymore

6 bar is more than enough to fill my 650b 2.4 tires< I actually have to let some air out afterwards

But I like the idea of the fire extingsher , one afternoon when i'm bored I'll try building one  ;)

I was busy with a similar excercise to supply co2 for my planted tank. However I didnt go much further as the gauges that I needed were like R600 and then still needed valves and adapters.

Another option is a soda stream canister, but not sure how much you will get in there.

Are you talking about the green ones they use to to up your aircon gas with?

If its them than I can get a crap load of it. My friend makes bread ovens for the braai and potjiekos stands/furnace out of them.

Alternatively I just shoot at them on stupid distances...

If anybody is looking for a couple in the western cape give me a shout!

Going to have the extinguisher tested once it is empty.  (Having too much fun here at work trying to empty it.)  Guy who tests our dive cylinders says the extinguisher can go up to a very, very high pressure if required so will definately need a regulator.

I have regulators and will tap a Presta valve into the copper head piece to fill up.

I like the idea of the bomb valve and the extension braided pipe in this thread.

floor pump R300

1kg extingsher R180-Makro

fittings ,plumbing tape , valves exct.  R300

Max 780 ......that way less than most compressors  and you probably have everything exept the extingsher already

I was wondering if there is any merit at all in converting a old Fire Extinguisher into a portable bicycle tyre pump?

Thought of charging/filling the cylinder from a compressor or garage pump.  Converting the existing mechanicals into a bicycle pump using bicycle floor pump hoses.

What would I need?

Gauge to check the filling pressure and one for pumping pressure?

Pumping control valve/lever?

How long would a 5kg cylinder last?

Is it practical?

Will it be like a bomb in the car?

Has anybody done this and am I looking for ***?

Thanks
