Knocked up and cycling..

You are correct, it is the appropriate term.

What is more, when we were pregnant, I had no difficulty training either and even did a Two Oceans Ultra when we were pregnant.

And despite regularly carbo loading with Castle Lager (there was not as much choice then) , I am happy to report that neither of my daughters suffer from Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.

I was fortunately that I did not suffer from morning sickness and our pregnancy was a very peaceful and enjoyable time.

I thought the cool kids all say 'we're pregnant' - damn I can't keep up ....

It's my understanding after being corrected in the past that, "we're pregnant" is incorrect as it is simply not true but rather that "we're expecting" is the term to use.

The best advise - less riding and more dishes. Barefoot of course...

Just kidding. My wife gymed (she knows her way around the gym, not like the poppies scared to sweat...) until the end. She did weights, stationary cycling, eliptical stepper etc. But she did find the pressure to increase in the last trimester when normal cycling - so she switched to the recumbant (spelling?) bike.

Best is, first listen to the dr, then your body, then your man. Don't push the training too much. There is always an alternative exercise to do, even just a brisk 5km walk...

That's what I thought - ran through both pregnancies (remember trying to induce labour on the gym treadmill at 4:30/km on the sunday before my scheduled monday ceasar - didn't work). Both kids breach but healthy anyway and recovered extremely quickly.

Everybody is different though!

I found out recently I am pregnant and really don't want to quit now and get completely unfit and have to start at square 1 in 8 months or so... My doctor said it is fine to keep going 'moderately', no more than 70% of my max. heart rate. That would mean strolling at 140bpm, and since it doesn't take much effort to get there, it feels rather on the 'easy' side than to the moderate side.

I am planning to get at least an hour a day in outside on the MTB (only on the tar road and easy gravel, nothing dangerous), and once I get too top-heavy to continue on my indoor trainer.

Are there any lady hubbers who kept on cycling right through their pregnancy? At what intensity did you keep cycling? How did it work out for you?

Can't offer advice but will most certainly offer my congratulations! Enjoy the pregnancy, the real work begins after the birth.

I am not going to offer any advice.  I only started riding after I had babies and during my pregnancies I endulged all my cravings and got fat. Very fat. :)

Congratulations on your pregnancy.  You will be a hot momma when your baby comes and be back in shape in no time

Indulging and getting fat - sounds a lot like my first pregnancy! Prior to baby no. 1 exercising was a curse word in my vocabulary, I smoked a pack a day, and was living in general a very unhealthy lifestyle. Needless to say, I got super-fat, since I didn't bother much about eating healthy and exercising during pregnancy (and also quit smoking, so more cravings...).

I took up cycling after my baby was born, and damn, almost fainted after that first 5km!! It took me around 2 years to shed the 25kgs I gained. So I really REALLY want to stay kind of fit (obviously no races anymore), and not feel like a train ran me over the first time I climb on the bike agai. Thanks for the encouragement! :-)

I was still a runner when I had my babies. I continued running well into my 2nd trimester, just until it started getting uncomfortable, after which I went to antenatal exercise classes 3 or 4 times a week.

I was told by the doc that the biggest risk wasn't the exercise itself, it was the risk of falling and hurting the baby.

Also I was told to keep the HR "moderate" and to hydrate more because there's a risk of overheating since there's no 'cooling mechanism' in there for baby.

All the best for the rest of your pregnancy.
