On Saturday, I visited the old BPM I bought my power tools from about 20 years ago. Big change! These guys will probably take a lot of Hardware Centre's business.

 

A great resource for some of the more esoteric woodworking stuff. they seem to have the complete Veritas and Lie-Nielsen ranges, the biggest range of Makita I've seen locally, Festool, Incra ... the works. Weird measuring devices and tools I didn't know existed. Even those really big screws for Moxon and other vices.

 

Well worth a visit! BPM Toolcraft, 93 Victoria Road, Plumstead. Tel 021 705 1247.

Yip, I have also started using them. Not always the cheapest but the salesman know what they talking about and you end up buying the right item.

So, it's finally happened. I've crossed over to the dark side.

 

Client just accepted my quote to sand her 60+year old 8 seater Yellowwood dining set so that she can paint it. I'll post some pics of the carvings on it - sadly I had to agree with her that she will never be able to sell it for what it's "worth" - including sentimental value. Sigh. I've restored some painted pieces before (Imbuia chairs that were enamelled PINK) but now I'm actually prepping them for paint.

 

Perfect chance to swop out the yellowwood for a more common wood and then paint.

 

Did you explain to her that they cannot actually cut anymore yellowwood tree's? They literally auction off permits for specifically identified tree's?

To say the wood is scarce and prices on the up is an understatement.

I am sourcing from listed dealers in the US, and according to the samples I have got are the real deal. I have approached the importers of the brand here to try to source for retail since its a product range I really believe in, but they re not interested and keeping it all cosy with the traditional channel, ridiculous pricing (sounds familiar?), especially with anything labelled 'brushless'

 

Also their product range is pathetic and out of date compared to what's out there. They need a wake-up call. Big Time.

 

But you are right, perhaps it not worth the risk of it going Pete Tong &  I best keep these goodies to myself and people who have personal contact with me. I actually buy for my own use, been upgrading my old tools since I use them everyday but I do retail of electronics and IT stuff as well, a lot of which I bring in myself.

 

I hear you, some of the local distributors are just in it to make a buck unfortunately.

Best of luck, don't over capitalize and get stuck with the tools, then again stock in hand always wins over ordering from overseas. Tricky juggling act that one........

There's actually quite large tracts of private forest in Knysna area where they are still cutting yelowwood (with permits) as well as blackwood, stinkwood etc. Last I checked (couple of weeks ago) Yellow and Stink were around R35K a cube. 

 

The way I see it is that the dining suite REALLY doesn't fit in their place, looks-wise. Rather than selling it for less than the wood is worth, rather paint it and thus preserve it. I've stripped some painted furniture before and it was remarkable how well preserved it was. Paint really protects it - so long as you don't royally screw up removing it 10 years down the line.

Maple Street Timbers up here in the big smoke selling at 26k and 30k, so a good price. Also nice sized boards.

I hear you, I have a few yellowwood pieces and while moving house I have been stopped at the traffic light and offered money.

Just think its wrong but then again its business. Can't have sentiment when it comes to that.

Try a pump and irrigation place. Looks similar to big industrial ball valve handles.

Hi everyone. I would like to start making some simple wooden furniture.

Was in the same boat recently and bought the following: 

Black and decker 18v battery drill (Chamberlains)

Bosch electric drill (Builders Warehouse)

Makita handheld grinder (Builders Warehouse)

Makita trimming router (Chamberlains)

Small electric bosch screwdriver (Takealot)

Black and decker circular saw (Chamberlains)

Small Black and decker sander (Chamberlains)

 

All of the above for under R7000 and with it I can tackle fairly big jobs.

I have also previously bought a Dremel 300o which is handy but not needed.

Also just bought a drill press thingie which an electric drill will fit into.

These are merely extras to make life easy.

Busy making a bench and router table now with the tools to make working with them easier.

 

Unfortunately tools are expensive and buying cheap just costs more in the long round. Shop around, look out for specials.
