I have looked at a few Gumtree adds and there are 2 that caught my eye, a Record drill press with 600 W motor for R3 000 and an ET drill press for R4 000. Never heard of the brand ET and the add does not say what size the motor is but it looks like a 550 W or bigger motor. There is also a new Mac Afric 16mm Drill Press at Adendorff available for R3 500 with a 550 W motor but I’m not sure it that is the way to go. Below are the links to all the ads. Main thing you want in a drill press is accuracy and any of them can suffer from run out/drift.You really need to check what its like in action to see if its going to be what you are after.The ones with higher speed ranges have super complex pulley systems so you end up not changing them often and drilling at the incorrect speeds.If you do check out the mac afric one then please post on here, I was looking at the same one recently and still in 2 minds about it. I'm very happy with it, would have loved to have an easier way to change the speed but changing two belts over three pulleys is not that much of a time waster. As far as run-out goes, I did a simple test in the shop before loading the machine in my bus. Simple test meaning I dropped the chuck down as low as it would go, pressing against the shaft from a few angles on the way down (that ... that just sounds wrong) As far as I'm concerned:1) Drill presses are NOT high precision instruments. Milling machines AREb) You will shed many more tears over a drill press table that is not squared (or wobbly) than you will over run-outiii) Drilling holes in wood can (almost) never be seen as a high-precision exercise. Wood grain always screws with drilling Pull the trigger on the Mac-Afric one. With the lathe it was quite easy to figure out the value though, its a very generic model used by the likes of Rikon, Wen etc etc etc so easy to get information about. All of their products are just Chinese tools that are branded with their name, other companies that do this locally are Seppach, Toolmate and a few others. The only real difference I can tell is that certain items can be better rated like bearings and bushings etc. Seems the "brand" can specify those details but the castings are all generic along with motors and other basics. I know Tools4Wood and Toolcraft also sell online.I mostly buy from mr woodturner, they have by far the biggest variety. The downside to a lot of the kits is that you need bushings for it and also need some very randomly sized drill bits too. That can push the price up quite a bit. The drill bits are normally imperial conversions which is why they are strange sizes. Easiest ones are the euro or slimlines because they are just a single 7mm drill bit. The Jr gents I bought cost around R350 in drill bits and bushings before even buying a single kit. The upside though is that they are the cheapest lidded pens and they can really show off a good blank very nicely. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
