Rocketman, (sorry for teh trumpism!)  Rocket-boy: thanks for inadvertently reminding me what i wanted to ask the forum:

What type of winding sticks to y'all use?

I don't have a dedicated set, but i'm beginning to think i should. atm, i use whatever 'works', pencils if the stock is narrow enough. Long wooden rods for the wider stuff.

I make my own but make one of dark wood and one of a lighter wood - gives contrast.

rocket man...i would have drilled holes through each piece of wood and used a 25 mm bit to counter sink the end ones so that the nuts where flush...then pushed the threaded rod through the holes the glued up all the pieces and tightened it...left the threaded rod in the table top and plugged the holes.

I honestly thought of something along those lines and figured it would be a really handy way to hold it all together. The main reason I didnt was because I was concerned about the dog holes needing to be in a spot where some rod was hanging out. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though and I really should have done just that.

I may still replace the top at some stage when Im a bit more skilled or have access to better tools for sizing and squaring the wood correctly.

great stuff..............your next project should be painting that wall  :whistling:

Haha!! it is pretty terrible. Its around 6m of wall that is mostly quite broken, all of the rest of the wall is quite nice though.

I have been trying to convince that neighbour to go half in with me to replace that section so hopefully he will bite at some stage.

any particular profile?

Agreed on the contrast. I found that out by accident using the dowel rods. One was meranti the other was pine. I found that placing the darker one at the back, worked best for me.

belonging to a woodcrafters club in your area has its benefits...the majority of the members are generally old and have more tools than they know what to do with them.

oh yes, the other thing i wanted to ask the forum: soap finishing of timber. What soaps do you use?

Never heard of it before so I did some research, looks quite interesting.

Seems you have to find a natural soap though to do it. Memories of fight club come streaming back...

was hoping the collective wisdom would help with identifying suitable soap. But i was going to trawl through wellness warehouse's collection of organic, au naturale soaps as a starter ;)

Well you could always break into a dumpster outside of a lipo clinic and then make some in an old bathtub but that would lead to all manner of other anarchy apparently.

Im sure someone will weigh in at some stage on here about the soap.

Out of interest sake what wood are you looking to finish with it?

Paul Sellers has a series on making winding sticks.

I have seen some people make them from the same type of wood then colour in the top section of one with permanent marker for contrast.

had to google that
