Hey everyone! I am new to triathlon and I am super keen to get going! I am starting off from couch potato level but would like to do a half iron in 2018. So far, I have managed to get to running 5kms (and slowly increasing it). I finally got a road bike and managed a 6km ride before breaking the jockey :( My swimming skills are above average and I continuously work on stamina. Now, while I am slowly working on stamina and gaining distance, my question is this: how do you keep yourself 'entertained' or in the right headspace for the duration of the race? After 30 mins of running, I get a bit bored.

Hi Dullscapel, I got into triathlon because as a youngster I was a competitive swimmer and after experiencing MTB racing for a couple of years I wanted to enter an off road tri as I thought I might do well. The running was always at the back of my mind. I'm in my fourth year of Triathlons now and the biggest surprise in this whole experience is how much I enjoy the running. I have wireless headphones so I always have my favourite music going without flapping wires and I kind of just switch off. I enjoy my cycling more but nothing gives me the sense of achievement like my long distance runs.

Soo Im thinking of giving the cape town ITU Triathlon a tri :), Do you think its doable without a wetsuit?

I know a wetsuit is preferable but given the cost of the event and the cost of hiring a wetsuit, its a little out of my budget also considering all the other races happening in succession?

The water is exceedingly cold in Cape Town, I would think it will be compulsory. (but I stand to be corrected on this)

If anyone looking for a tri-suit, sportmans warehouse fourways still has a yellow ticket sale and they have some suits going for R850.  Was just in there collecting something, so had a quick look to see.

I am waiting for the moment I feel like that about running! I have seen that some races have rules against wearing headphones- is this the norm?

Yes I think they are not allowed. I don't use them in races. It took me a while before I started to enjoy it like I do now. Maybe you will too. I find using Strava for running also helps my motivation. Where I live there are no where near as many users for running as there are for cycling, it's far easier to get some good positions on the leaderboards. If your just starting out you will be regularly breaking personal records too.

We are talking about the water in the V&A habour, is it really that cold?

It is basically west coast sea temperatures as the course is reasonably close to the entrance and not in the parts after the narrow passages. I didn't enter last year but at the previous two races it was first shortened and wetsuit compulsory. The following year it was cancelled. This year is earlier so hopefully the swim will go ahead but I'll be surprised if wetsuits are not compulsory.
