I’m new to Triathlon’s and did my 2nd Triathlon ever this weekend at Buffelspoort (5150) which went ok (did Buffelspoort Xterra 4 years ago). Legs were quite tired at the end though!!

I was crazy enough to enter for the Full IM in PE next and would like to get some advice on training programs.

I did Epic in 2016 and Comrades this year and usually took a recovery week after 3 weeks of training.

Has anyone or planning to use Coach Parry’s Full Ironman Program which you can download for free? It is a 12 week program but I don’t really see recovery weeks? I was thinking of changing the 12 weeks to a 15/16 week program by building in a recovery week in after every 3 weeks of training.

Any thoughts or advice. Anyone used this program in the past and how did it go?

Thanks in advance.

I did my first full IM this year and my recovery weeks were still quite intense in the last 12 weeks. I would recommend keeping the training more or less what you are used to in the build up to the 12 week program and then give it 100% for those weeks. If memory serves me correctly my dip from the hard week to the the recovery week was most noticeable at the weekends where a 6hr ride became 4hrs and a 30 something km run became 20 something km's which wasn't what I had expected as far as 'recovery weeks go'. But it worked and I finished comfortably and performed better than I had expected.

The training is well worth it I hope to do another one soon when I can properly commit to the training

Good luck and enjoy it.

So noob had his first swimming session on Tue - crazy time of the year to try and schedule training sessions after hours. Could hardly move my shoulders and neck without pain yesterday, felt as if I tore both rotator cuffs - sommer all of the muscles in there! Good to go today, back in pool tomorrow and hopefully over the weekend as well, with hopefully a next session lined up for next Tue.

Lots to learn.

Swimming is the most technical, and frustrating for me. Can't become fast with hard work. Have to break down that swim stroke and become more efficient in the water. Happy training.

Jip , Agreed, it sometime feel like golf get one thing right then the previous thing you worked on goes.

Before I get in I have the following to say to myself, Head down, roll, legs together, hands pointing down.

Have at least come down from 4:00 minute per 100 meter in Jan to below 2:30 now, but as with cycling and other endurance you need to spend the hours to get the muscle memory correct..

Next week I will be getting some jammers to replace the swimming trunks and hopefully that will help.

Aiming to do below 40minutes in my first Triathlon in 20 years in January.

Will be something new to swim with all the other people in the water.

Good idea, I like that...

Don’t underestimate how disorienting that can be. Look at the course and make sure you line up on the outside edge; if you’re on the inside edge, everyone ends up swimming over to you as you approach the turn...

I will also be doing a short warm-up swim in future to make sure my breathing & muscles are ready, because it is even more distressing when you get swum over and you’re deep in oxygen debt from the start.

So, quick update...

I agree with everything above. It's freaking difficult! And yes, if you try to improve all at once, everything falls apart!

So I really appreciate having been told yesterday (session 2) that it's okay. I have the basic elements. My arms work, my legs work - lots to improve, but I can get from one side of the pool to the other. So first get your swimming fitness up, we can sort out technical improvements later. What helps is that I'm also apparently good at recognising what I'm screwing up and trying to correct it.

But ja, at this stage, esp towards the end of the session I did not need somebody outside the pool telling me I'm going okay and then everything falls apart from 3/4 through the length!

So now first (swimming) fitness - and that's on me.

Hi I need some advice please. I am looking at getting some deep section wheels 58mm but I have been told its to deep and 50mm is better. Will the 58mm be that much different than the 50? Thanks

Not sure why it would be too deep. Might be too deep for certain conditions but better for others. Look at the conditions you are more likely to cycle in and take t from there. As an example I live in a hilly windy area so I went with shallow wheels. Were I living in the platteland with lil crosswinds I would go 88 in front and even deeper at the back.
