Quick question about right of way in Tokai.  I've been trying to find the answer, but I can't find it...

I know there was a bit of controversy about it a while ago and I think that's caused people to have differing opinions.

On a dual directional trail (Boulders for example) is it the rider going up or the rider going down who has right of way?

I heard some heated words over the weekend and it got me wondering since both sides insisted that they were right.

Uphill has right of way for a bi-directional trail. It's to do with IMBA's set of rules and tokai mtb follows IMBA, from my understanding of previous heated discussions around the matter.

Tokai used to be the opposite. Before the fires the guy coming down had right of way.

It may have all changed now and the only multi directional trail is Boulders, which is really neither up nor down!

I just think no one should have right of way and everyone should slow down, pull over and be courteous. In a head on situation, my favourite outcome is 'you go.. no you go.. ok.. then you both go and have a laugh and say enjoy your ride bro/brodette' and everyone pedals on smiling.

If I had to crash into some moron riding up a one way trail that used to be dual directional and he refuses to apologise I would definitely get irate. But only because his/her refusal to follow basic instructions/signs and not acknowledge fault is why society as a whole is going down the tubes. Some toss screamed at me the other day 'It used to be dual way and so stuff you, I've always done it'... pffft

Tokai indeed used to be opposite and did not follow IMBA.

It may have changed one would have to check.

It may have come from days before IMBA

Tokai has been open for biking for eons

The reasoning used to be that it is easier and quicker to stop when going uphill so less dangerous. It's just a pain in the butt to get going again.
