Update.

ADMIN POST: Keagan's condition remains relatively unchanged.

The initial accident blood loss was significant and thus he remains in critical condition.

His parents are currently in Dubai en route to his bedside.

Once they are on site, we will have a more detailed update.

Keagan's friend Adam has arrived at the hospital to be by his friend's bedside.

Once again the family would like to thank everyone for their kind messages and apologise if they have not replied as there are literally thousands.

No apology necessary.

Heard on Supercycling that he went through the window and was badly injured. Really pray for him and his family.

Thanks for keeping us updated Scalpel!

Please let his family know that no apologies are needed wrt replying to every comment and expression of support and that we are still praying for them. I am of course assuming that you're in direct contact with the Girdlestone family.

After hurrying to reach their son’s bedside, Keagan Girdlestone’s parents – Wayne and Desere – have reached the bedside of their son.  The parents were disturbed by the sight of him but will doubtless be glad to be able to support as they can in the recovery of the 19 year old Dimension Data for Qhubeka Continental Team rider.

The announcement was made recently that after a long journey the parents have finally made it to their son’s side.  “Wayne and Desere are by Keagan’s side and while they were shocked at the sight of their fit young son laid up in hospital, they were also grateful to be able to see him and personally thank the medical staff in Rimini for their tireless efforts,” the statement on Keagan’s Facebook page read.

More detailed reports on the exact condition that Keagan is in have been slow in forthcoming, largely due to respect for the parents.  But we have been informed that more information will be provided in due course, now that Wayne and Desere are able to be fully updated.  “We will provide a more detailed report in due course,” the statement read.”

Once again gratitude for the support that has been shown by cycling fans, friends and many strangers is very heartfelt.  The statement concluded, “Thanks again for all your lovely messages and words of encouragement.”

RoadCycling will continue to keep you updated as we hear more on the situation with Keagan.  We hope and look forward to Keagan making a full recovery as quickly as possible

ADMIN POST: Today we are happy to report that Keagan is more aware of his surroundings and knows that those who love him are around him.

The immediate danger has passed and now he begins what will be a long road to recovery.

As well as Edvald Boassen Hagen's lovely mention of Keagan at the Criterium De Dauphiné, the race organisers of the Coppa Della Pace came to see Keagan today to present him with the first place medal for the race. This was a kind and touching gesture that the family has really appreciated.

As we begin the rehab phase of Keagan's recovery, updates on this page will be less frequent to allow Keagan, his family and his support network to focus on this recovery.

As always we want to thank all of you for your continuing support and love. It has been as touching as it has been overwhelming. We would like to particularly thank the staff at Rimini hospital, the management and staff at Hotel Betulla and the people of Rimini who have been so kind and supportive.
