Depends how much time you have, and what your interest would be regarding SS.

Couple of options:

1) use old bicycle you have to convert to a SS, should be a hardtail. You can buy a tensioner and SS spacer kit for the rear from your LBS and do the conversion, or drop the bike off at LBS and have then convert for you.

2) Browse the interwebs, and buy a SS specific frame, and parts. This could take some time if you have something specific in mind. A good measure of patience is also beneficial. Then take all the parts to the LBS and have them build it for you, or build it yourself (if you are proficient and have the necessary tools.

3) Buy a complete SS bike outright. This may be more challenging, as most bikes are purpose built, and the bikes arent really " off the shelf, mass produced"

All the above depends if you are in the market for MTB or Road bike, or hybrid kind of boutique bikes.

After all this effort you may find that SS aint your thing, so think carefully how much time, money and effort you want to invest into it.

I ended up buying a Draft SE SS a few years ago. It cost me (if I remember correctly) about R3500. It's made of the heaviest steel possible but it does the job.

My recommendation though would be to find an old (pre 90's) tube shifter bike and convert it into an SS. All you need is a chain and spacer kit. Have done this to two bikes, works like a charm.

People people - what are you doing?

Your first SS has to be built from used parts that either you or your friends have lying around.

Building your first SS should be a rite of passage not a pick from a catalogue!!!!
