WINTER CRITERIUM CHALLENGE #2 (same event, date updated to event #2)

Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club, in collaboration with Gauteng East Cycling, invites you to join us for 20 minutes (+ 1 lap) worth of fun in the winter sun.

  • Where: Klipriver Industrial Estate (Google Maps: -26.4323669, 28.0625618);
  • When: Sunday, 14 August 2016 @ 10:00;
  • Cost: R50 (enough to cover cost of toilet hire and medics);
  • Who: All ages, abilities and genders - there will be a category to cater for all abilities;
  • Prizes: Top 3 for each category.

What to expect:

  • Line entries only – pitch, pay and ride/race;
  • Each race will be held over 20 mins + 1 lap (4-5 laps, depending on speeds);
  • A 2.5Km circuit comprising 3 right turns and a left turn on super smooth tar;
  • With approximately 11m elevation per lap, it really is a flat course with speeds through the corners in excess of 40km/h. Add some crosswinds and fellow competitors and you get some awesome racing.

More information, and a video from our club champs can be viewed on www.germistonwheelers.co.za, or by following @germistonwheel on Twitter.

HOW TO GET THERE:

From Alberton

  • Follow the R59 south to Vereniging;
  • Take R550 exit (Randvaal/Heidelberg Road);
  • Turn right, over the R59 on the R550.
  • After 1.7Km turn left, and follow road for 1.7Km.
  • Crit circuit is held behind the brewery on the industrial park roads.

From Meyerton/Vereniging

  • Follow the R59 north to Alberton;
  • Take R550 exit (Randvaal/Heidelberg Road);
  • Turn left and keep left on the R550.
  • After 1.7Km turn left, and follow road for 1.7Km.
  • Crit circuit is held behind the brewery on the industrial park roads.

If you start driving/riding on a dirt road, you've gone too far. The left turn is just before the tar road becomes a dirt road.

We're hoping this will become a regular series of events through winter each year.

We're starting off with 2 this year and hoping it will spread to other areas (in GP) to make it a bigger series.

It is a sanctioned event, approved by Gauteng East Cycling.

Depending on numbers on the day, the categories will be licenced and open.

Thereafter we split by gender and then by age group.

We don't want to incur the expense of online entries, so it will be difficult to determine numbers.

We''re setting the price at R50 per person, to cover basic (mandatory) costs, and the club will add in prizes for the category winners.

Bit of a far drive for such a short event and it clashes with a mtb race that I have an appointment with after suffering through it last year, but will definitely try to grab the next one!

Hope it's a super successful event with many more to come.

  • 2 weeks later...

Don't think I mentioned prize money for each category. Not a lot, but something.

Any idea yet on how many riders and categories can be expected?

I'm starting to get excited!

We have no idea on numbers - the downside of line entries.

Judging by some feedback, if everyone that said they are interested comes, it will be great racing across all age groups.
