Possibly, but splatter doesn't really happen from TIG or MIG, even with traditional Stick Arc is about polarity and the right current

There's load's of wisdom on u toob nowdays

TIG is really the way to go for advanced DIY, I have an Afrox branded inverter welder that does TIG, I have all the goodies except the frigging Argon bottle, which is a problem to locate at a reasonable price

Have a look at auction and also have a chat to a fabrication contractor. There are Argon bottles to be had for not a lot of money.... I got mine through a contractor. Known him for years and mentioned it in conversation. Week later I had an empty bottle in my garage... Left over from a job that they did

Torch and regulator will set you back a couple hundred. Tungstens are around R10-R15ea. To fill the bottle cost me R1200. (Well I just swapped my empty for a full one)

Another place to look is at a scrap metal dealer. You'd be surprised what people "chuck" away.

As a last resort you can of course just rent a bottle...

Here's a lovely weld on  substation doors from Jhb City Power contractors, where skills and talent abound

btw, they have also taken to 'welding' substation doors closed because they can't seem to get a decent system of locks & security in place

Should put that in the "There I Fixed It" thread....

My father in law once said that my welding looks like an iron bird crapped all over everything.......but then my grinding is good! I made all the security gates and burglar bars for my first house myself. I still ride my bike past there regularly and after 2 decades it is still in place. It's good to see. My second house, I was smarter and got someone else to do it.

Being in place and being strong and sturdy are two different things...   :whistling:

This is scary !!!

Its sad that he cant see.. that the hinge is made from brass and he is welding it with an arc welder with  steel rods. Hope he is not getting paid as a welder.

hmm welding and brazing is a skill that I would love to learn.

Simple....take some leave and enrole at any one of the many training facilities and bobs your uncle. You have a new skill.

I can so associate with this thread (well not the City Power weld LOL).

My dad also said I welded like "pigeon sh#t". On my wish list is a proper Oxy-Acetylene set and a proper welding machine......and I would love to learn the skill.

My late father in law showed me how to solder two pieces of stainless wire together. You take a piece of copper wire, clean in lightly with emery paper, wrap it around in coils around the two pieces of stainless or other wire and then heat it up with the soldering gun and solder it and it creates a capillary effect and a very nice and neat solder joint.

Let me get back to my day job now....and stop dreaming about building stuff in my garage.

I would love to get a frame that is hand brazed and keep it naked. The colors in the metal are enough to decorate it. Must be a fully lugged frame....

HAve a look at some of the stuff from Saffron Frameworks, he has mad skills.

I am almost sure those are brass plated, you will struggle to find all-brass hinges, if you do, they are expensive. Obviously little demand for the real thing, Most of happy for a bit of short lived bling.
