Hard vs soft tail

Hi guys

I have been to the bike shop. I enjoy road and mountain biking. I had a trail full suspension bike. I need to purchase a new mtb bike. With the money I have I can buy a Giant Antem or Trance or Scott spark 960. All full suspension. Scott looks nice but has with cheaper gear. Giant Trance I love but mostly down hill. Giant anthem really nice but just to much money. My question is.. If I buy 2 Scott scale bikes with good gear, one for myself and one for my wife, am I buying a good buy? Will I be able to ride the Contemanskloof and Tygerberg hills still easily? I will be using these scott scales bikes for Cape Angus and 99er road races.

I will need to sell my wife's old bike but the two bikes will stil be more cheaper than one Full Suspension bike.

It's a hard decision to go from soft tail to hard tail.

Hope for some encouragement into the right direction.

Julian

Nothing wrong with a Hardtail. A lot if not most of the people on those trails are on hard tails. If you wanna go full suspension I bet you 90%+ of the replies will be ANTHEM all the way.

Agree if you decide dual just get the Anthem over the other two. You won't have regrets.

I've got the luxury of owning both a hardtail (scale) and dual sus (camber). IMO, the hardtail is easier to maintain and my "go to" bike everything under 03h30 in the saddle. Day in day out I'm on the hardtail. Ride the Camber on long Saturday rides and for Stage Races. For Stage races I would never make it on a hardtail.

Really comes down to the type of riding you planning.

If the wife also likes cycling, and you do road races also, I think the answer is obvious. Go for two hard tails. It is something you can do as a family and two hard tails will still be cheaper to maintain than a Anthem/Trance.

If it was just about you and you do singletrack on a regular basis, then the Anthem/Trance would be the obvious choice.

Before you do anything try to get two demo bikes and ride and see how you feel....would suck bad to buy new and then just not have hardtails work for you

I agree - it depends on what you enjoy. I have the scale and a dual sus. The hardtail is definitely less maintenance.

But I find myself picking the dual sus almost every time... it's just less racy and more fun. I find myself looking for the little jumps to pop off and for my limited skill level the dual is more forgiving

I'd rather ride a crap bike, and be able to ride with my wife, than have a fancy bike, and not be able to ride with my wife.

We have awesome quality time on the bikes together.

Don't be afraid to look second hand. We got a very nice 26er anthem for my wife 2nd hand 2 years ago, even with the money we spent on maintenance, a new saddle and repairs (replaced fork damper and some drive train parts) in the last two years on it, we still haven't spent half the value of a new bike on it (just more than a third of the price of an equivalent new bike actually.)

Definitely better with your wife than without , just went from duell sus to hardtail and you know what , it is perfect , inflate rear tyre little less than normal and Bob's your uncle . Don'g go shopping new , many great value deals on hub and if you are lucky you can still pick up 2012/13 Anthems for very reasonable , best advice above is go get demo bikes and first see if your wife really enjoy's the off road cycling and then start the ........ planning , have fun .

Thank you guys. I will definitely get two hard tails. Will get my vrou a soft seat and soft pants. For the price I pay I could fit one of those seat posts that move up and down from your handle bars on my bike and convert to tubeless. Baie dankie.

Hardtail with a dropper sounds like a blast for you and a hardtail with a propper Sella Italia ladies saddle will be great for the wife aswell.
