Concerned Kromdraai Motorists against unlawful cycling

https://www.facebook.com/groups/215010165548357/

Some of those photos are people performing marginal transgressions but some others are blatantly selfish, ignorant and arrogant riding by fellow cyclists.

People don't like to be told they are wrong, even when they are caught red handed. (Have you ever tried to hoot at someone on the highway when they are clearly texting or talking on the phone? You get some quick sign language lessons in no time)

I don't know how you fix this to be honest.. The clubs should be the starting point with zero tolerance for any traffic offences... no?

On that Kromdraai group in the pic with 2 cyclists riding outside the lane, the guy actually admitted to passing them "very, very close". That's one way of making friends with a Cyclist.(regardless of whether they were wrong)

I'm sure we can all agree that not all motorist are saints. But cyclists assaulting motorists does not help our cause at all.

I agree fully. It's been a rough weekend for cyclist rep.

Sounds quite ROF out there and things might escalate further:

This is NOT the first incident of an attack. I was attacked about a year ago. I can tell you now, the little **** came off second best and ran off with his little winky between his legs. Samantha Vigus was physically attacked, punched in the face, hair pulled and slapped around. Regardless of what anyone has to say, WE as residents and land owners in the area, as tax payers and as protectors of this area, have had enough and this **** is going to stop.

As always the residents were pruning their flowers and reading their bibles when said person attacked them without the slightest provacation

nice pics on FB - but i believe Jan and Bobby need to be informed that it is a traffic offence to operate a cellphone camera whilst driving - bet they were steering with their knees.

Telling someone they are driving/riding like a chop is usually the slightest provocation that will cause people to go mental..I've seen it.

Very true, a few years ago, a guy driving a Range Rover Sport nearly flattened me into the kerb whilst he was talking on his mobile; at the next set of lights I asked him if his Bluetooth was faulty. He lost it completely: very shouty and very sweary.

Admittedly my question was tinged with a certain sarcasm but the reaction was quite a sight to behold.

On the Kromdraai FB page, Mr Jan Vermaak comments that DIPSLICK has identified himself as the culprit..... This man clearly has no sense of humour.

It was a joke, Jan. A very serious topic, but a joke nonetheless.

As a cyclist, and motorist who gets regularly pissed off with errant cyclists (and one who witnessed the disgusting incident first hand), I suggest that Jan and his friends open the FB group to cyclists as well - at the moment all we have are a bunch of motorists illegally taking photos while driving, and winding themselves up.

A one-sided conversation won't solve the problem. BTW Jan, I agree with your sentiments re the cyclist in the photo. If you find him, donner him.

I rode through there on Saturday and its terrible. Riders 4-5 abreast, u-turns without looking, swerving, the normal stuff.

I ride with the Lab sometimes, but I have stopped riding in these club rides, as it seems that once you have more than 5 cyclists in a group, we seem to grow some sort of entitlement complex, and I can see how those massive groups must be a real pain for any other road user, including other cyclists. Dear all people who ride in club rides: Riding in a large group doesnt absolve you of taking resposibility to ride like a normal human being, you are still accountable for your own actions, so dont ride like a chop. ( I hope that knob who was on the wrong side of the road coming over the Lion Park bridge reads this)

Look, its 947 time, and that means that there will be more cyclists (golfers) coming out of the woodwork. This means those of us that are aware, should be even more aware and vigilant about the locals, just as they need to understand that 947 is their silly season.

- Be considerate.

- Ride 2 abreast INSIDE the yellow line.

- Thank drivers who show some patience.

- If you stop, move off of the road.

- Slow down for the traffic circles.

- Don’t simply turn into Bidon/SomethingCountry without looking first.

- And for god sake, don’t stop in the cycling lane to look at the tigers.

Cyclist and Cradle residents need to show some mutual respect to each other, and this can only happen if WE start behaving.

Again Cyclelab!!! - Once while driving out to cycle in the Cradle, on the little bump going up to polofields the "Lab" marshall, (read idiot) was riding in the middle of the car lane gazing around at his minions...when I pulled next to him, wound my window down and politely but firmly told him that as a Marshall he should be setting an example....he just stared...dumbass...the big bunches are completely a problem, as are the 2-3 riders with 1-2 thinking they can cycle in the vehicle lane....you guys are spoiling the Cradle for ALL of us!

If only we were as capable of running down the same reaction in bringing to book the numerous hit and run/near miss incidents.

Well I suppose a parallel approach would be to form a FB page covering hit & miss / near misses etc, but that might be considered adversarial? Probably better if an educational, inclusive approach could be developed, but I'm at a loss to suggest what that would be.

We all believe - residents, land-owners, 'protectors', cyclists, drivers, commuters, motorcyclists (not much mentioned about these guys?) - that we have a right to use the Cradle, and in fact we all do as the roads are public. But all parties are not blameless, yet we all (almost) naturally adopt an adversarial approach, or in reference to the Kromdraai FB group, we do tit-for-tat comments. Out on the road, it's even worse if you feel that someone tried to kill you with his car whilst you were cycling, or some cyclist smacked someone around.

In order to get past the tit-for-tat comments/actions stage, does anyone have any suggestions how to defuse, and then build a positive situation out in the Cradle? Campaigns? Revised roadsigns? Leaflet drop? Public meeting?

Its not just the Lab, its all big groups unfortunately.

I actually spoke to the Lab guys about how to stop this, and its difficult to police large groups properly.

I am also not a fan of blaming the club for everything, remember the club rides consist out of a bunch of individual adults. The starting point is for each of those adults to ride like a decent human being. If they did that, much of the problem would go away.

I would suggest that we ask that group to invite a few of us there, or they can come and engage here. We can try and work towards a solution.

If there is a public meeting, I will gladly join.

I really want the message to get to them that these cases are exceptions, and that retaliating towards all cyclists will just escalate the situation.

I tried to post on that group lastnight from my wifes account, but saw it was closed, as are the comments of the angry lady's personal account.
