How effective are these patches in the relief of muscle and joint pains and does it also effect the performance of the muscle ? On the side, what are those plasters that some athletes use around the knee , etc , that looks like giant varicose veins ?

VERY good as an anti inflammatory, have used them when I did my knee (meniscus and ligaments)

Just don't use them for too long a period, as with all anti inflams.

As for the tape, it's readily available in all sports stores and is essentially the modern way of "strapping" yourself up. Supposed to provide a bit more support to damaged / inflamed muscles or joints.

transact is a plaster with deep heat/perde salf

those plasters you refer to is leuko tape and works to support muscles etc during training/events. they however only work if properly applied (I usually go to my physio friend for assistance)

some people buy it from sportsmans and just stick in on themselves, in which case it's merely a fashion accessory (almost like compression socks)

ok...i am being facetious....they contain some anti-inflammatory...but to be honest I have not noticed any benefit myself...i would say they are 70% mental...cheaper to buy cataflam

In the long run, yes. It's more for immediate relief of swelling and pain, as with all topical treatments. The cataflam would work for a longer period of time, and be more effective overall, but also target teh whole body vs just directly to the region that is sore.

I normally develop pains in me shoulder ( healed badly after motorcycle accident some years back ) during long rides ( Mtb events ). How will taking Cataflam before an event effect my performance . I merely want to enjoy my ride and not finishing in the top 10

be careful nsaid's during exercise

Further studies have cautioned that the use of NSAIDs during ultra distance exercise, such as an Ironman Triathlon, is associated with an increased risk of exertional hyponatremia. Researchers believe that this effect is likely due to altered renal (kidney) function. The issues related to altered kidney function in athletes are not hard to imagine. Poor fluid transport and restriction can lead to dehydration, hyponatremia and at the extreme, kidney failure.

I don't think it is as effective using it once off.  It should be used for a period, so that the inflammation can be targeted.  For short term events maybe get a voltaren injection the morning of the race/

which technically is masking an underlying problem and allowing you to compete with "pain relief" and therefore doing more damage to the injury because you cannot feel the underlying pain anymore. nsaids must be used with caution and with associated rehabilitation excercises

cataflam works great, but chows your stomach.  Even if I take it after a big meal, I will still end up with a sore stomach for a day or 2.

Transact patches are great.  Its the only pain killer / anti-inflammatory I used when I broke my collarbone.

Hardly a Power balance bracelet, nor a placebo.

The Transact patch does not aid in the healing process, it does however well in managing the localised pain.

I have had good results with muscular pain caused by sprains/ligament damage by using these.
