It is an excellent deal and the Edge 1000 is an awesome device.

Sounds like an excellent deal. The 520 here gets close to that price.

I am (hopefully) going to be testing an etrex 30 (non touch screen version), retails for under R4000 and does the GPS thing very well and all the other bits and bobs.

Maybe you should have a look.

Bought a Fenix 2 second hand + new HRM strap (Wahoo Ticker) for under 3k. Its perfect multi sport weapon. If you run and want to use your device your gonna need something other than edge unit.

Goto DC rainmaker site and check it out :)

Before I bought an Edge I used a Garmin Dakota 20. In terms of a GPS it works extremely well. The Dakota is back in its box and I'm willing to sell if you're interested. I have two bike mounts, the one I modified to fit onto the steering tube top cap, the other is bar mount. Included is a silicone cover. It also has South African mapping.

I don't really need to do route planning on the fly, waypoint markers from preloaded routes would probably be more than I need. I suspect all the gimmicky extras will lose their appeal after a few rides. What I would want is:

1. Accurate route capturing

2. Reliable sensor pick up and recording

3. Ability to simulate routes ridden through the indoor trainer (or downloaded/shared routes)

4. Pre-planned waypoint mapping if needed for races

5. Easy to read while on the bike, in sunlight and dusk/dark without too much fiddling or having to adjust head unit angle.

What I don't think is essential is

1. Touch screen

2. On the fly mapping

What I think I may like

1. Tracking me so the relevant significant others can stalk me while out on a ride

2. Not sure how reliable the "accident" sensors (Garmin 820) are

3. Integration with smart lighting and radar units

This may seem like an odd question - but why do you want a GPS unit?

Are you planning on using it to tell you where to go ? Or where you have been ?

Assuming you can talk, a GPS unit can help you tell an emergency aid worker exactly where you are - something that only a GPS unit can do - granted there are some useful cycling features too...

A previous manager used to say when you buy baked beans you either by KOO or you buy ***. (i think at the time of the conversation he was talking about strippers but none the less - it applies here as well.)

Get the garmin you wont be dissapointed. I have the 520 and its awesome.

Garmin all the way!

And you will thank yourself form making the decision should you ever need to make use of their backup.

I had a Edge 800 and now have the Edge 810 and bought myself a Forerunner 735XT about two months ago. I'm extremely satisfied with their products.

This is a great device. We use it for all of our adventures. The AA battery usage is a great advantage when time is limited for charging or charging facilities not available. In July I used it with Lithium batteries(they are expensive) for 4 24 hr days before I had to put new ones in.

You might also want to look at the Xplova X5.

Not too sure if there are any agents in SA, but you can order them on the web: www.xplova.com

Personal preference and how much you wanna pay. I have a Mio which I've had for over 3 years and no problems. Almost half the price of the Garmin and equivalent functionality.

Bryton is good and cost effective. Garmin is good but probably most expensive.

Decide on the functionality you want and then decide on the unit that fits your budget.

So the inevitable collection of every conceivable accessory is well under way. The next purchase after my indoor trainer is a computer/gps head unit and associated paraphernalia.

I was dead set on the Garmin 520 bundle, HR sensor and speed/cadence included seemed like a bargain. The problem is, I have been impressed by the wahoo products and started to look at the wahoo elemnt. Now the capabilities of the wahoo seem to be just short of the Garmin edge 1000 with the exception of touch screen and colour screen. Also the wahoo products Bluetooth capability would allow me to sync to my iPhone when doing off the bike stuff (like running, etc).

My current budget could allow for either one.

Garmin edge 520 via momentum multiply is R5700 (without delivery)

Wahoo elemnt + speed/cadence + tickr X is R6000 via cyclelab after momentum and club discount.

What do you guys use, what would you recommend and why?

Thanks again for entertaining my growing collection of all things bike related!

Once you've used the ELEMNT you will start to understand why Team SKY uses Wahoo products...

It simply is the most amazing bike computer on the market.

Check out the reviews from DC Rainmaker etc...

I have a 520. Very happy with it. And have had cause to use Garmin support, and it's stellar - they really look after their users

FWIW, the 520 on an indoor trainer is pretty sweet.

GARMIN is the bench maker the rest try and compete.

They all work well and Garmin in SA is very good.

Obviously if you bring 1 in from over the seas don't expect Garmin SA to honour the warranty.

That's what's prompted the interest in the wahoo. I've also looked at the firmware/software updates since then and it appears that every item on his "not so good" list has been addressed and more. I've been really intrigued by the wahoo particularly with the integration with the kickr as a controlling unit. Really doesn't feel as clear cut as it was when I had only my "Garmin goggles" on. Trying to be impartial isn't easy!
