This is why cyclists fear for their lives...Being annoyed is the least of it

GOT CUT OFF TWICE YESTERDAY, ONCE IN THE MORNING ON A TRAFFIC CIRCLE AND ANOTHER AT AN INTERSECTION WHICH I HAVE HAD FAR TOO MANY CLOSE CALLS ON (THIS INTERSECTION IS THE ONLY WAY TO ACCESS A DESIGNATED CYCLE PATH) ... CHOPS IN THE CARS DO NOT EVEN RESPOND WHEN YOU SHOUT OUT.

As Monty Python would say "pointed sticks"...

Yesterday as I was riding Constantia nek (coming from Constantia) just before the circle a passing cars mirror hit my handle bar. I was flipping riding in the gutter in an effort to avoid cars. :( Guy slowed down checked his rear view mirror and carried on. Think it is time to ride with a helmet cam.

While we are venting

Cycling to a meeting in town, I pass a car parked in the cycle lane, then the chop opens the car door too. ....had to do a serve to avoid an possibly painful experience! At least I knew what was happening re traffic behind me and had the space to move further into the road.

Indeed, a camera mounted facing back and one forward.

Then maybe a stick

mounted on your bike.

Motorists should then give a wide berth as they dont like their cars to get scratched.

Would this work?

I would love to see the reactions.

I participated in an excercise with the PPA last season where they loaned out the FLY6 camera and light combo ... sent them a couple of the incidents taken on the camera. Unfortunately this was a trial period only, and they then asked for the camera back .... by now I would have a solid data base of lawless drivers and the state of our cycle lanes.

I am on the bicycle 5 days of the week commuting with a couple of mid day city rides to meetings thrown in .... so very aware of how little regard the average motorist has for cyclists and their safety.

My once cycling whatsapp group just this morning 11:18 got a photo asking if someone know the plate which was involved in a hit and run on a cyclist yesterday morning - damaged shoulder, broken ribs etc etc, requiring surgery.

At 11:48 the owners name and address were found, and legal process have begun to get him arrested..... the power of social media his high... and I hope he gets his just deserts and the injured cyclist recovers completely and well - and doesn't back off from criminal and civil claims...

I had a car turn in front of me like that once, luckily I was able to turn into the road alongside the car. I confronted the driver and asked why she did that, she was adamant that because I was on a bicycle, I should have stopped and waited for her.

Glad your wife was able to take some evasive action and not sustain any bad injuries.

Would be good if you can keep us posted on the progress.  I have yet to see a motorist in SA get nailed properly for something like this.

Its not just motorists against cyclists, its just basic Chops driving cars.

Last week in rush hour trafffic, the lane in the other direction was backed up, I ended up nose to nose with someone travelling the wrong direction in my lane.

Now I drive an old large 4x4 so I naturally told him to engage reverse and go back.

When I was able to get past him I told him that he is breaking the law.

His response: "Everybody does"

Say no more...this is one of many reasons cyclists fear for their lives on the road and even OFF the road! And they want to point fingers at us as cyclists who has no cage for some protection...
