Hi all please help,

I have stupidly cross threaded the arms of my friends  Shimano Deore crankset and pretty much ruined the the crank arms.

Bike shop says buy a new crankset for ~R2k.

Please help, what is the best solution!?

Phone Kev, 082 466 4565 and see if he has a solution.

What I would do, not that I would have forced the unit on in the first place, but many have before learnt the hard way and you won't be the last.

I presume you mean that you have cross-threaded the pedal inserts and not the clamp bolts.

Which model Deore - 9 spd, 10 spd or older?

pics would help.

Start shopping. https://www.on-lynecomponents.com/collections/cranks-chainrings

Copperslip or grease on threads - good idea. If you cannot turn a bolt easily with 2 fingers; back off.

Depending on the extent of your power and force applied; an option will be helicoils.

Coil inserts – also known as wire or helical threaded inserts – quickly repair or reinforce tapped holes in soft metals. http://www.hpiinserts.co.za/

Fixed a brake post on a Rockshox some time ago with helicoils.

Find a different bike shop. Crank arms can be ordered separately as replacement items. I know this as a friend of mine lost his left crank arm due toe the nuts not being tight enough and he ordered it separately (it was the non-drive side.)
