Flashing front lights on early morning rides

So left home earlier than normal on wednesday and going north up cedar after the dip saw what I thought where 2 Riders 10 m apart returning from a cradle ride  as I got closer there were a number of riders in between

I was very impressed at how visible from very far you can be with a flashing light , even an el-cheapo ! It may not help you see much or you may think you no longer need your light on and try conserve  battery - Don't, its also about being seen.

A stark lesson in how to be seen ! Cars avoid what they see !

I often encounter 2 guys returning from an early morning ride as I start my commute.

Even though I absolutely agree with the comments above, these guys have flashing lights that are too bringt, and shine too high - yes they are noticed, but the poor drivers are also blinded..

Moderation - especially with flashing lights coming from the front

I see it very often.

And coloured lights work as well. See how far away you can see a motorbike with an orange headlight compared to standard lights on bright.

It make a huge difference.

I want strobes front and back when riding in the morning

I'm not a fan of a strobe front light. I've had 3 near-misses where I believe the driver, in all cases, couldn't judge my distance from him/her and cut me off. I prefer a steady front light, aimed downwards so not to blind other road users. It can still identify me however and I can see the road ahead.

PS Coloured lights - does anyone know if coloured lens are available for bike lights in this country?

The logical human though would take their foot off the gas and concentrate if they become blinded by a flashing light.

anywhere else in the world yes, but not in Zuid Afrika

I haven't done a scientific study on it, but since I started riding (in bright daylight also) with front and back flashing lights, I can swear that I have far fewer near misses with drivers pulling out in front of me and that they give me a bit more space when overtaking also.

A few years ago I was heading off to an early flight, it was 4am and I had very little sleep preparing for what I needed to do that day. I was about to turn right through an intersection with a green light and then stopped for some reason, I honestly had not noticed the 20 odd steady lights that we heading for me and would have ploughed into a group of cyclists. Flashing lights would have made way more difference I think.

I still to this day feel like an absolute ass for even getting that close.

It can be irritating to motorists

At least you are visible - higher priority

Agreed! Staying alive trumps EVERYTHING else!

At least they will be hooting and swearing for blinding them than running you over and take off.
