Very attractive option, more so when you have 2 bikes. Much easier to swap wheels instead of a crank arm.

Tempting, but not so keen to tamper with carbon wheels that are still under warranty for another 10 months.

Perhaps look at the PowerTap P1 S pedals at R12 995.00 single sided but can be moved between bikes and comes with dual ant+ and ble

Thanks, but the accuracy of the pedals don't seem to be up there where it needs to be, well that's from all the reviews I have read.

I do like the option of the GS hub.

Just need to chat to the guys at Token wheels to hear what they say about warranty etc.

So to get the powertap Gs hub installed I will need to take this to my local bike shop? In this case westrand cycles?

I have confirmed that the unit will fit my wheel.

You can run it through West Rand, we currently sold out of the GS hubs but new stock is arriving later this week so we good to go early next week just in time for festive season training !!

The PowerTap P1 pedals have just passed a validity and reproducibility test with flying colors, the first pedal based power to achieve such a high rating, below a link to the the article.

We have built a few Token wheels up, really impressed with these wheels as the brand has come a long way and definitely right up there !!

do all of the power meters come with their own display, apps etc.?

Question is, if I buy a powermeter (4iiii, powertap, stages or whatever else), would I typically also need to buy e.g. a garmin device to display the data and to have access to something like garmin connect to review and analyze workouts?

Basically, are there other apps and options that one should consider in addition to the power meter itself, and would e.g. a Stages give you access to better apps etc. than say a 4iiii?

Short answer.....yes, you'll need a head unit like a Garmin to get the figures in front of you.

Also.

You can have a look at what signal what power meter throws out.

For example.

Stages does ANT+ and Bluetooth.

So you will be able to connect to a Garmin and to any smartphone that has bluetooth running an app on it.  App wise you can then choose from a variety.

Flanges are likely to be different so you'll probably need some spokes.

Also, PowerTap hubs traditionally used J-bend spokes ... not too sure abou the newer models.

I would advise to put as much if not more effort into understanding what a power meter provides and how to read/analyse/use that unless you intend to use a coach ..... otherwise it just becomes another 'looks cool' but makes no difference to your training or speed/position

*just my humble opinion, I'm sure some may disagree*

Yes you will need a head unit.  With a power meter on your bike irrespective of make or model you will need a head unit (like a garmin, joule, wahoo, bryton etc) that can show you power in real time as you ride (same as seeing speed, cadence etc).  Choice of head unit is dependent on the protocol of the power meter, either Ant+, BLE or both.

When training such as on an indoor trainer you can use software and apps.  Main list of software here https://www.wahoofitness.com/media/downloads/KICKR_App_Comparison_Table.pdf although there will be a few others.  As long as you can pair your power meter with choice of interface (PC, tablet, Phone) you can use any of the apps with any power meter.  When training on an IDT the most common apps are trainerroad, Cycleops and Swift.

Then as NSBB said you will need to understand what all the power stuff means and how to understand and use the analysis properly

Read some books

Once you understand then there is further software like Golden Cheetah you can use to analyse your power output, curves etc.

Yes you will need new spokes, the R25.00 quoted is for round double butted spokes. if you want bladed be prepared to pay anything from R75.00 - R125.00 / spoke. The existing spokes we unfortunately unable to use as the lengths are different.

The GS hub makes use of straight pull spokes.

I've got a PowerTap GS built into a Token C28 wheel. Works perfectly.
