We are all aware of the crime problem in our country.

The issue that should be handled on a forum like this should be to find out why there is a sudden increase in bike jacking?

We all know what our bikes are worth, but what does the thief on Rustenburg Road know?

Or, where is he selling the bikes? Or, is he being instructed to steal bikes for someone?

A mate of mine was jacked near K'dorp late last year. His Specialised Roubaix with Concept wheels was stolen.

Somebody must have bought the bike. Where was it sold? Are the bikes being stripped for parts that are resold? If so, where else could they be sold other than on this platform?

If they are being sold complete, how is it possible that we are not aware of it? Cyclists don't buy 50 k bikes on Gumtree. Or do they? Suspicious much?

Are they going through a retailer? In that area?

Does someone who rides with you suddenly have a smarter bike than they could afford. Has someone you know just upgraded with 20 k wheels?

Come on, guys! Instead of bitching let's use this incredible resource to gather some info.

This community might have lots of people over a large area, but we all need to contribute by asking the right questions. And using this platform for something other than scoring cheap points.

I have been saying exactly this since 2005 when bike jackings first started!

There HAS to be a market for this stolen stuff otherwise why is it still so prominent...in this day a dude will do anything for a buck, if that means getting paid R500 to hijack a cyclist or a motorist then so be it...but someone is paying them to do so, I don't believe for one minute that these hijackers are acting alone...

There is a kingpin or consortium paying them to do the dirty work and the bikes are getting stripped and resold as parts or as complete bikes, resprayed or re-specced to throw off the original owner...

After the incident where Jagwil's daugter/wife was attacked in Centurion, there was a documentary on Carteblanche.  From that it seems most of the bikes got taken over the border and sold in Moz and other African countries.  I assume that it is still the case.  It is now several years later but I still think most stolen bikes get moved over the border.  But there are many who will see the oppurtunity in the market and try and sell them on Gumtree, etc.  I think that is on the increase though.  There was the story some time ago of the Hubber that stole his own bike back after spotting it in an Gumtree add.

Carlow is the road at the traffic light going over Barry Hertzog. If you go right you go into Melville. The hijackings happen just past the coffee shops on route to Napier Road. I strongly suggest you turn left at the lights or to be safe avoid the area.

My suggestion is that you go halfway up Hill road and at the first stop street before the school, turn left and go to the golf course, turn right and up Wicklow. Alternatively, skip Hill road altogether and after Emmarentia Dam, go straight to Wicklow

Wicklow..  Urggh my nemesis..

I just cant keep up along that section towards Westcliff, but rather that than a gun in the face.

But, friends, heed the warnings. Please. Its not worth the risk. Change your route.

Forget trying to figure out where the bikes go. Been there and nobody to this day has any more info or a clearer idea.  I was a victim in 2011 (albeit in midrand), along with a unsuccessful attempt once before and another one once after.

*edit - additional info

Up Hill to the traffic lights.

Left, left again at Barry Hedgehog and right at the traffic lights to the golf course and up Wicklow.

The Melville community forum, police and local councilor, and the Illovo Cycle Group (ICG) are participating in a cleanup of the area at 0800 tomorrow if anyone is available to volunteer - all extra hands welcome - and free beer afterwards.

Bring plastic bags, pruners, hacksaws, shovels,  gloves, chainsaws and whatever else you think might be usable.

Park at the tennis courts across from Bamboo - everybody welcome.
