4th Rule of losing weight: Go see a qualified nutritionist for proper dietary advice instead of anecdotal storytelling and internet "truisms".

veebee went to see one...i do believe he said money well spent ? ...something i should have done in Jan 2015 when i decided to put in the effort to loose weight and improve my cycling....lesson learnt.

I have already contacted the person...R850 for a visit.

if all goes according to plan this week...there might be money in the piggy box in about 2 weeks...if not i am gona have to keep at it on my own for now.

It does help, there's no doubt.

I learnt a huge amount when I used to go.

These days and for the last 10 years I just apply what I have learnt.

Also used to have weigh-ins every 2nd week which made a difference.

There was also no bull$hitting this guy because he knew his stuff really well and would tell me what I had done before I even opened my mouth.

If you feel that a nutritionist is going to make a big difference go and see one.

If you on Discovery they'll pay for it or for some of it.

This.

I've been having coffee without sugar for about 2 years now. Put some sugar in yesterday by mistake and it was completely foreign. Ruined the taste.

Ditto. So glad I'm off the sugar particularly when I have about 6 coffees a day!

Add that sugar up over a month....scary!!

Discovery paid my dietitian in FULL  ... from my savings plan, still WELL WORTH IT

BEST money I ever spent on my health !!

and as far as specialists go, actually cheap.

1 cup of coffee yesterday no sugar...

no coffee to day...so tempted to just have 1 cup....at least it is not as difficult as giving up smoking...more habit than addiction.

yesterday i realised how much junk i eat...stop at the wholesaler they have a chip and coke machine...tea room has the best samosa...tea room in durban has fresh egg sandwiches...1/4 bunny at govenders...left over chips in the fridge...the list just goes on and on...lucky not all in one day...

as i went about my day i made a note of all the places i get food...it was difficult but I stuck to my cereal in the morning...apple and provitas...salad and mixed veg for dinner.

all my brain is thinking about is coffee and food...i am gona do this thing...glass of water first thing this morning 500 ml bottle filled with ice cold water and ready for the day.

Think about future savings - not having to pay for healthcare and actually NOT getting sick... BEST INVESTMENT you can make

I have some memory that you were using, or at least recommended to use, one of those food intake apps? Not so? If you had been, all this additional food, junk or otherwise, would have been part of your calorie intake, so what's the surprise?

As for ditching coffee, to eliminate sugar, and possibly milk, you might want to re-think that? Coffee has a variety of diet benefits, particularly for a cyclist. And the calories you were ingesting from having coffee/sugar were probably somewhat swamped by the junk food list.

The cereal, provita/apple, salad approach also sounds misguided and not sustainable. (Your brain is telling you this already!) At the risk of sounding negative, or repetitive, your relationship with food isn't an honest one. You need to break that cycle before contemplating losing weight. I appreciate the cost implications of seeing a nutritionist, so how about a cheap rehearsal? Use a food app for 4 weeks. Set a maintenance calorie intake, ie nothing too drastic with the risk of failure minimised, and stick to it and review at the end of 4 weeks? In this way you're rehearsing the skills of smart choices, tracking food intake, being honest with yourself etc, long before you need to think of dropping weight. I believe this approach will allow you to tune your skill set in preparation for a period of long term weight loss.

You are not eating enough. In the long run it will not be sustainable. Eventually people give in to cravings and polish a bucket of chicken from KFC. Ditch any food with labels and packaging and get the Fatsecret app. It will assist you with making sure you are eating enough food.

I got given a lot of crap for saying a calorie is not a calorie on the hub before, but eating 2500 calories in sugar and bread compared to 2500 calories of real food will not have the same effect on your body.

i need to figue out a way to flavor the water (maybe add some lemon ) not sure how long i can handle plain water.

Get a sodastream... best. thing. ever....

Pure lemon juice in soda water is THE most refreshing drink after a ride

You don't have to give up coffee without sugar

You don't have to give up red wine..

25kg lost is testimony to the above

Keep up the good work

I don't know how many kcals Isetech is consuming, but my gut agrees with you, hence why I suggested a maintenance calorie period. With the right choices, a maintenance diet can consist of quite a lot of food so that "is that ALL I'm allowed to eat" dread never materialises.

Also kind of comes back to the whole idea that if you take 10 years to put on the weight, you can't expect to lose it in 10 months

True story!

I was 120+ kg back in 2010. 95 kg in 2011. And am sitting at 83 kg now after touching 80 kg last year (I'm giving myself a pass for the 3 kg pick-up). So roughly 40 kg drop in 6 years. (Not an aggressive rate of loss at all).

I also remember the phases when I 'starved' myself. Sure they had a short-term effect on the scales, to reach 'goals' etc, but I felt weaker (ironically I'm faster and stronger on the bike currently than my 80 kg self) and ate that weight back on quite quickly. Not sustainable at all...

well just exactly that... its the whole "Diet" thing which make people think that its easy to lose weight in a short space of time. There's no quick fix to this, I have been on the journey.

106kg in Nov 2014 when I did my first 947

83kg this morning. Still have some to go, weight has been going down but sometimes like 1kg every 2-3 weeks or so which I am not phased about.

I am happier about maintaining this, instead of failing every few weeks and having to start all over again.

IMHO a dietician is not gonna tell you much more than you can learn from doing proper research on the internet. Many dieticians I have talked to are also still old-school in the sense that they still believe in the 'eat low fat' lie.

I am currently on a keto eating pattern. And lots of raw veggies and load of water. Completely scaled back alcohol intake.

Because keto is high fat, I only need to eat 2 meals a day. I am definitely not starving. 2 espressos in the morning. Hi-fat breakfast at 11:00 and then dinner at 19:00. Also daily 2.5 hr MTB ride here in Tygerberg.

My weight loss has averaged about 1kg per week. I am at 77kg now. Have lots of energy and sleep properly for the first time in years. You can obviously argue that the combo of exercise, low alcohol etc causes the weight loss. But this combo works for me.

Ya sure thing! There are websites that state that vaccines are 'dangerous' and websites with 'scientific proof' the world is flat.

The person who was educated and studied science that was peer reviewed over and over again, is fairly trusted IMO. Would you rather go to a heart surgeon, or get your wife to google it?
