Second Hand Market pricing

The second hand market has gone crazy and there is no pricing guide to look to.

We have no book value guide and people are unsure with their purchases. Furthermore there are people making a living off buying used bicycles and selling them overpriced a day later. This has elevated and inflated perception values of owners that are thinking of selling.

Most often the year of the model of bike is not stated or known.

We need something like https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/ for our local market.

What are your views?

Educate yourself before buying anything (not just a bicycles) and make sure you know what the rough cots are for an item new and secondhand.

And make sure what you are buying will do what you want , to many people buying stuff without the proper knowledge and then blame the seller because they "thought it would do this or that".

Thats my view.

Everyone is entitled to ask what they think their item is worth...basically though if I were to ask R1000 for an deore front derailleur or R100k for a 2012 Totem kids bike those items are never going to sell because a new one costs less.

It is the same as if you walk into Cash Converters - sometimes they have real bargains in there, but most of the time I look at stuff and think a new one is only R50 more so why buy 2nd hand "junk" with no warranty?

Like BaGearA said - look around on online stores/ your local bike shop and educate yourself on what new stuff costs then work out a ratio in your head as to what you personally pay for a used equivalent item. And remember that any item bought 2nd hand generally doesn't come with a warranty (even if the seller says so) so take that into consideration when buying used goods (applies to most things).

Just something to think about, if those people were overpricing their items, they simply wouldn't sell, and they wouldn't be able to make a living from it.

The auto industry has a book, published by TransUnion called Mead & McGrouther.

Try find one dealer who will pay you what is listed in that book for ANY vehicle.

Same happens with bicycles. Even if the market is so much bigger where the book is published.

The SA market is tiny and ultimately the buyer sets the price. If the price is wrong, the item will not sell. Like a 2015 Specialized Allez in 54cm with 9 speed Sora I am trying to sell for a neighbour, even though it is unused. Brand New. Oh yes, it is Lime Green. Maybe that's it.

I think we should all get together and agree pricing on all cycling equipment.

Just like the retailers did. I'm sure it worked out well for them.

Too many variables if you ask me. All 2005 Specialized Sworks with 9speed XTR will not be the same. And to say that you have different prices on the same models with the same components, but in different 'condition' is going to be near impossible.

All bikes are also not stock standard, people swap/upgrade/change components after a while usually; I just can't see this working. Ever.

You don't need a guide to know that some mense want plaas pryse for their goeters.

Those should just be ignored.

But in general I think that the majority of ads I see in here fit squarely in this category:

Fairly priced. But inflated to compensate for potential negotiations.

All they expect is for a reasonable person to make a reasonable offer.

On the other hand every now and then there's an ad for something that's either cheap as chips or just bladdy good value. There's enough of these going around to make one question how fair the asking price of someone selling the same thing actually is. But its not fair to make this comparison. If you first inline. Lucky you. If not. Snooze you lose. But these 'gelukkies' are no indication as to what the price of any second hand item should go for.

Some sellers don't want to wait for a reasonable cash offer so their stuff is priced to go.

If you are lucky enough to pick up one of their bargains, good for you...

If I like it, I buy it, if not I leave it for the next guy.

One of the well known resellers made me a ridiculous offer on a bike I had for sale, I just laughed and said move along, if I was hard up for the cash I may have let it go.

The willing buyer/seller rule applies.

Depending on circumstances items are not always sold for what the are worth.

Thats how the dealers make a living, out of ppl who are desperate . I don't care if they didn't buy on bike hub . But disagree with it when they buy up all the bargains on bh and the average joe doesn't get a chance to maybe own a bike he has always wanted.

I am a bit of a bike whore or so I have been told ???????? Am also pretty pedantic about how a bike's condition should be. Often to my own detriment but so be it. Really enjoy playing with bike parts in the garage and deciding what next.

Bottom line for me is ...THIS IS NOT GUMTREE!

If you are going to buy bikes on bh and resell for a profit at least add some value to the bike or service or do something . Not just add R10k ++ just so the next hubber can fill your pockets.

And yea I get willing seller willing buyer ....doesn't mean I have to agree with the profit mongers .
