Brake line popped

So this happened. Luckily not while belting down a hill or anything, just felt the brakes fade while stopping.

A bit of history, second hand bike, brake seemed to fade so I send it in for a service, got told it was air in the system, fixed. Second time got told it was the O-rings in the brake level thingy part, fixed. Third time....pop!

I jut wonder what caused this, the bike shop did all they could to help so its not on them, I am just curious.

Bike is a Silverback Sora 1

I'd say it's been nicked on something... Like a barbed wire fence or a wall or something.

That, or it's one helluva defect in the hose.

+1, I have never seen or heard of this happening. Very rare

The culprit looks like the job of a cable cutter nicking the brake hose while trying to cut cable ties that hold the hose to the frame. The cuts position in relation to the frame makes this seem even more likely. You can even see the indents of where the tip of the cable cutters punctured through. Way too clean.

Don't think its hose failure either. Too peculiar. They will swell or crack at worse if overheating.

So you might have had air in the system to begin with. But who ever tried to sort that out for you nicked the hose. An honest mistake and hoses are cheap as chips so easy to replace and bleed.

Darnit, you're right.

Related / not related. Those sidecutters must be helluva blunt!

I use Flush Cutter for those guys, doesn't leave sharp edges and they are sharp!

Replace hose and rebleed. Shouldn't be to expensive, just check they don't nip it again.

That looks like its been clipped with a side cutter when replacing that cable tie.

Lucky it didn't let go on a hectic downhill, or when you really needed to stop! Replace and bleed, and if you can't, try a different bike shop than the one you've been using so far. As good as your relationship with them may be, I'd be really freaked out if this happened to me, and the trust relationship would just not exist anymore

You make it sound more like sabotage. I'm sure it was just a mistake.

One I'm assuming is the bike shop's fault. But it could have been anyone.

I would share the same concern you have based on how hard it is for me to to imagine ANY competent bike shop letting something like that slip by undetected. Especially since testing the brakes after a bleed is pretty much a given.

But there's a theory for everything...

It makes sense to test the brakes before tying down any hoses to the frame.

Perhaps the mechanic bled and then did a parking lot test and all was well.

Then took the bike back into the workshop to tie down the hoses with some cable ties.

When he was done he realized it could have been routed better. So he snips the cable tie

he had just zipped up. (not realizing that he nipped the brake hose in the process) Re-routed the hose and lever or what ever and zipped it all up again with a new cable tie.

And since he already tested the brakes. He didn't bother to do it again after the cable ties.

I don't know. It may sound like a plausible theory. But who knows what really happened?

Maybe Flatdog7's wife is trying to get back at him for leaving the toilet seat up.

I'm sure it wasn't deliberate sabotage, more than likely a guy rushing his ass off to get all the jobs done for the day, combined with poor light in the workshop area, and all of a sudden he has nicked the brake hose. That toilet seat theory may hold weight, I have 3 women in the house, I know how they can get :)

Dunno what brand of brake hose that is but tge decent Shimano BH90 hose has a thick layer of woven glassfibre between the inner hose and the outer cover. Difficult to cut.

Replace with a decent hose and you should be good....

What difference?

BTW, those bikes are specced with Shimano Deore level brake-sets.

Was thinking along the lines if someone had bled it with Dot fluid in a mineral set - the fluid could've chowed through the line, though I suppose the seals would pop first.

Should've spent more time in wording my thoughts though.

Yep, def cable cutter, happened to me plenty of times, but instead of nicking the hose, I always nick my fingers.

Honest mistake and easy to overlook. But should have been seen with a proper inspection.
