Where's all the battle stories?

I'm keen to here why Velouria called it the "never ever again edition"!

Any and all statements made within 1 month of 36One are subject to change

Without giving too much of the race report away, I think we're starting to think about our exit strategy. This is one tough race, and it's tough for everyone. The fast guys, the slow guys, the fit guys, the guys carrying a few extra kilos.

Or maybe I'm just getting old!

Going over Rooiberg at midday (topped at 12:20) just sucked the energy out of me and unfortunately had to abandon effort shortly after Calitzdorp.  However, looking at the sms about the 150 early bird entries and am seriously considering comeback for this unfinished business.

Well done to all that finished, it remains an awesome experience and also to Velouria and Captain on the three-peat.

Thanks Dogs. It's guys like you that we admire. The sheer doggedness on display at this event is humbling. This race hasn't changed too much at the front, but in the middle and the back the numbers have exploded. The stubbornness, the resilience, and the perseverance on display is spectacular!

Further evidence that we're never doing this again - there is actual footage!

Awesome!    How can you say "never again" if you look so happy in the video?

That's not happiness. That's relief at being finished mixed with porridge brain. And beer.

Even though DNF for you, well done on getting as far as you did!! Much respect 'Dogs.

2015 was my 1st Solo and it ended with a DNF. 2016 was unfinished business and the desire to complete the transaction was strong and I succeeded in getting my 1st Medal @ 27hrs! 2017 I came back to break the 24hr hurdle....

I raced as hard as my body had trained for. It was going so well reaching CP1 and 2 over and hour and a half earlier than the previous year. I was on track for a 23hr at 181km..... Then came Rooiberg after 10am in the morning along with the heat and no wind. I struggled, I broke and when I arrived at Calitzdorp I already had that thousand yard stare and a tad heat exhaustion. It became a fight within myself to leave the haven of CP3. I lost plenty of time. I eventually left to finish what I started. I didn't know if I was going to make it. It was touch and go at one stage and so started the mind games, the mind fu*k that it was. I purged my guts all over the dusty road leading to the last water point from pure nausea and sugar hype trying to revive my fatigued body.

The last 23km was an endless hell but then I found myself riding into the finish as though I had gone through some form of time travel and for a minute couldn't believe how I had got there......45mins over last years time.

The dust has settled, the pain has gone, the body restored. I missed the early bird entry but I have already made my accommodation bookings for next year.

Overcoming your own adversity is a drug and the personal satisfaction addictive....... I'll be back 2018.

Well done on finishing! I think the above might have been what got you in the end. I kept reminding myself to slow down when I felt everything was going too easy. I saw a lot of people going flat taps in the first stages and leaving me in the dust and then later regretting it. Pacing yourself from the start and not getting caught up in all the excitement and trying to stick to faster bunches, is as important as the training you put in.

Thanks TrailWarrior

Well done on persevering and finishing,.  My story pretty much the same, did 1st one last year in 27+ hours, so came back this year with intention to finish in daylight, although realistically my planning was more in the 25.5 hours region.

PS: We may have crossed paths on Rooiberg and at Calitzdorp last year....

Since we both  have similar goals for next year, maybe we should touch sides closer to the time?

Cheers

Hi All.

Firstly, congrats to all those who finished.

This year marks the second year of me missing out on this great event (due to fractures) which I so seriously wanted to compete in..

I just visited the web page to enter next year's event, but it shows entries not open yet..

Was I too late for the early entries, or was the early entries just for the 2017 entrants?

AFAIK entries were only open for those that did it before
