Pre-Race Hydration Issue

This is the second time I have experienced this, so not being TOO dumb I am just going to do what I do on a training day.

For the 94.7 2 years ago and yesterday for Ride For Sight  I did a short loosener ride the day before (no issues) wich entailed a bottle of energy drink (USN Winners Energ) and that night I drank a bottle (700ml) which made me pee like a racehorse the night before (I drank water to compensate as I have been through this before) and also makes me pee like a racehorse next morning, even twice at the start while waiting.....and at least once in the race.

I felt thirsty from the get go and while a bottle usually lasts me 30 to 40km on a hot day and riding hard, I finished a bottle at around 45km but the first 45km of RFS are relatively easy and quick so to me this is already a sign?

I was ok up to Heidelberg but not as good as I have felt training recently and the first hill was a surprise (to add to issues I got stung by a bee in upper thigh at the base of the climb and that muscle felt crampy for half an hour, as well as flippen sore!)

For the rest of the race I had to ride in survival mode and only quenched my thirst after lots to drink and a good night sleep.

Question:

Is my assumption correct that the drink is the reason I pee'd so frequently and felt dehydrated?

For training rides I sometimes have breakfast or do the "breakfast on the bike" thing and only start to drink on the bike and have no such issues?

I used to carbo load with Cytomax in the old days but that affected my sleep.

My race just felt so completely poor compared to my recent training form.........

Feedback from those smaretr than myself will be appreciated....

My assumption would be that it was the drink. You should rehydrate with water. If you are concerned about electrolytes, add a pinch of salt and some sugar to your water.

The bee sting thing complicates things so it is difficult to tell what the issue is. What I do before a race is take a multivit (has enough potassium and magnesium to stop the cramps).

Just a question, do you drink USN Winners Energ before or during your training rides?

How old are you?

Also how much do you sweat?

Some people drink more than others. Personally I work on a sip every 20-30 minutes and 2 bottles are enough to last me up to 4 hours, if I manage them well 4:30. I also don't drink anything after I've woken up, I eat my oats and that's it. Post race I'll drink a lot of water(+- 1.5L), some rehydrat if it was exceptionally hot out and if I still have sports drink left I'll finish that off.

Look out for over hydrating, read up on hyper glycemia (I think thats what it is called) being thirsty does not necesarely indicate that you should take in water, you may just be too hot, so try and cool your core down. A good indication is to look at what color your pee is, if its clear you can have too much water in your system.

Thanks DS...Training rides I drink Winners Energ during the ride and nothing before. Thus going to adopt same for races with maybe a "throwaway" bottle at start. Worked well for me on 947 which I rode with Breakfast on the bike and went well, better than RFS

Beesting was inside upper thigh and felt like I was cramping

Yeah, thats my training rides....gonna keep doing that. I think the issue is the sports drink the night before...

Only got to clear late yesterday so that points me in direction of dehydrated...?

There was an article somewhere about the fact that we don't dehydrate as much as we think. Sure you got to hydrate yes but the issue is more replacing lost minerals and managing thirst.

Over hydrating is almost worse.

However it sounds to me like your body was telling you something already...

You drank a lot... you peed a lot... I think your body was well hydrated.

I think it is best to speak to someone who really can help you with this that is medically trained.

You should not need to stop mid race - there may be other issues causing it.

I think you should see a doctor...

Joe bloggs telling you 'well I do this....' Is not really going to help as we are all different.

Amazingly eating/drinking the right stuff in the right amounts can make SUCH a huge difference.

Another factor is whether or not you had a successful poo the morning of the race.

At a 100km trail run I recently did I left the house at 4 a.m and didnt have a poo. At 30km I was full, needed to pee all the time, couldn't poop and when I ate I got stomach cramps.

It absolutely wrecked my mind and my ability to eat. I scraped home but was uncomfortable for days.

So many factors which can influence you on race day which seem so silly to think about.

Not going there....My question is why the heck does drinking a bottle of USN Winners Energ make me pee my life away? (both soon after as well as into next morning, leaving me "dry"?

All I can say is don't do something different on race day to training days. If you don't drink like that before big training rides, don't do it before a race.

That way you know what effects you and how.

Just a thought, have you tried to use some other pre-race drink instead? To be sure that is the specific product that is causing it or perhaps your body is just like that .... who knows you may be surprised

I'm using a phone now, so will give the short version.

Google the ingredients. Several of them are diuretics, and some if them place exessive load on the kidneys.

E.g: magnesium pulphate, sodium citrate, potassium phosphate.

Can post some studies later, if anyone is interested
