RaceTec Road events Beta values... Is it a bias 'algorithm'?

"Beta and adjusted winner's time are the slope and intercept calculated by linear regression, comparing results in that event to the cycle tour or 94.7" P Savage

This is statistics, not pure mathematics?

So, I didn't want to start another fred on this.  Checked out my seeding for the Tiletoria 45km race and for some reason 15 penalty points were added, despite the climbing being in excess of 750m.

See the seeding FAQ's here: http://results.pedalpower.org.za/seedingfaq.aspx

So any way I sent the following to the PPA:

Good day,

On the page for seeding explanation, there is a statement that for MTB events that have a climbing of 750m or more, no other penalty will be added.  This race was well over 750m climbing.  Why was the penalty points still added?

If I look at the GPS data of ten other people (GPS devices, not Strava app data) the following results are obtained:

Garmin Edge 810 – 1073m

Garmin Edge 820 – 870m

Garmin Edge 810 – 996m

Lezyne Super GPS – 1032m

Garmin Fenix 3 – 924m

Polar M400 – 1092m

Polar M400 – 1088m

Garmin Fenix 3 – 954m

Garmin Edge 520 – 902m

Garmin Vivo Active – 871m

This gives an average of 980m.  If I eliminate the highest (1092m) and lowest (870m) values of the data set, then the average is still 980m.

Let's see what they say.

(Edit: I only saw afterwards that the heading read "Road Events".  Whatever.)

I assume it is because the route was less than 50km? Wording is a bit ambiguous.

Need ask obvious , you did check the MTB seeding and not Road seeding? (seeding is cross pollinated but mtb events gets a penalty on your road seeding and vice versa)

If you're doing the 45km and not a junior busting through the ranks, is it really worth the effort?

If you start smashing it and rally improving you WILL improve your seeding. I don't understand this mid pack competitiveness.

On the other hand I think guys who complain should get to choose where they think they belong and then see if they can stay with the bunch. Often where you belong and where you think you belong don't quite have an = sign in between them....

Bit off-topic - I know I'm sometimes critical of the racetec seeding but if you feel like complaining look at the SASeeding index of the recent Stellenbosch MTB

Winner of the 75km got an index value of 60!

Winner of the 60km - index value of 30

Winner of the 42km & 50km - index value of 40

Winner of 30km index value of 50

The winner of the 75km received a seeding value similar to the guy that finished last in the 60km race...

Compared to these guys the people at racetec look like rocket scientists!

Its like "whose line is it anywhere" where everything's made up and the points don't matter.

no, when using mtb events for the road, no penalties are added...  but when using road for mtb, 15 points are added regardless.

i did the 45 km because it had more singletrack.  the 75km was just a long boring climb and some singletrack here and there.

i can ride singletrack well where the majority of the 75km riders are just dirt roadies.  most of the longer mtb events are just aimed at the fit people.  my query was related to the addition of penalty points, that's all.

i'm pretty comfortable in the group i'm in.  my road seeding put me in MC and I reckon it's pretty much where i belong.  what I don't like is getting stuck behind auntie or oom on singletrack and they don't know or want to give way.  it is a race, after all.

now take the west coast express - 78km and very little climbing.  NO PENALTY.  the rules for Road event state that anything under 80km will get a 15 point penalty unless it has 750m climbing.  do you think the WCE had 750m of climbing?

I came back to racing after some time focusing on Triathlons and just entred for the race and emailed the PPA describing my riding and asking for a temporary seeding- this was then used to get my actual seeding...

Ask and though might receive.
