Herald Cycle Tour Ladies Pro Crash

Riding in AL, we couldn't hear the announcer (or at least, hear what he was actually saying) until much closer to the line than where the accident happened.

The rider should definitely have been closer to either side, and the ladies should probably have dealt with the situation better. But I agree that there should absolutely have been a marshal or something on a bike ahead of them.

Also, having the finishing straight bottleneck into one lane is surely not the best idea, when the 55km and 106km need to use the same area?

Edit: just saw the mention about no vehicles allowed in the final km. Hmm, then much better planning is needed for the final kilometer, to separate the short and long distance riders.

Only place to put your head down on a sprint, is on an indoor trainer

Outside... watch in front of you... :whistling:

Often there's just the sight of a rear wheel, spinning shoes and someone's boom-boom in lycra

In fact, 94.325 percent of the time ????

The "other" side, the one with the 26% incline on VERY rutted and rocky jeep track...

Yip

That's the one with a bit of cement segment and then the rocky business

With a South Easter always ready to add a bit of airflow to the overheating radiator ????????????

How is the lady/rider doing that was involved in the crash. I went past there and she was a good 30-40 min down before the ambulance pulled in......

All this comment shows is that you are someone who has not been in a 100% effort sprint bunch coming for a line. There is no sight beyond maybe two bikes ahead. The group will naturally be spreading out as each rider tries to make space to surge for the line, so the movement is going to be very dynamic over the final stretch.

The focus of each racer is on the immediate surroundings and where to place yourself for the sprint, which competitor is on your back wheel, et al.

I get that the elite mens race does not need to have a lead out vehicle as they are always the first over the line, but the ladies constantly face this issue. CSA and the Organisers need to come up with a new plan. A slow moving rider that is not part of their race category cruising in the middle of the road coming to the finish is a rolling accident every time.

I can promise you they had all the same vehicles and marshals for all racing groups, thats a UCI and CSA requirement. UCI also does not allow any vehicles into the last kilometer, especially if the road is totally closed for racing, so no com, no bike marshall, nothing. If you want one of the reasons why (except for putting a one ton piece of metal into that bottleneck) go and see what happened in the 2010 amashova finish of the elites.

So ja, no vehicles to do road clearing in last kilometer.

Point 1. Race organisers should do the start time planning better.

Point 2. If you notice your bunch is passing slower riders towards the finish, THINK and anticipate.

True about the last km for the vehicles to be pulled out. Just saying that there should be someone watching this all go down in the last km and clear the way (sideline marshalls or something). Slowing down that vid I saw the bottleneck that was created and the lane on the right opening up - K@k  organising there about finish line placement.

The rider was on the far right but the finish line setup was terrible. Wrong place wrong time for this guy. The start times are always an issue. I think someone has mentioned that they have given the ladies all sorts of placements and yet its always an issue.

I think the riders need to be more vigilant and not just chase a wheel 10cm ahead @ 60kmh++ and 500m to go... spells disaster. I have a similar gripe about the Emperors Classic - typically the MTB finish. It turns into emperors. goes through the booms (some matts there not sure if that's the finish) and then snakes into the parking on the left and over some matts there too. Now which is the finish line? the second set of matts in the parking is so crowded by people (riders and non riders) makes things a bit tricky.

I am yet to see a finish line that's cleared and open. Road and MTB.

I mostly agree with you, but on the flipside they would likely have passed loads of short distance backmarkers in the last few kilometers prior to the sprint, so those in the sprint bunch should not have been oblivious to the fact that these okes could potentially be lurking around the sprint area.

Not sure who is really to blame for this, but as I have often seen, merging fast long route riders and slow short route riders always create a potential cluster%^&

A short route should never finish before the elites of any category. If a long distance rider has popped then the sprinters should watch out for them.

No cars allowed in the last 1km is probably the timing company does not want heavy cars destroying their timing equipment!
