Strava weekly mileage goals - should indoor training count?

Because it's easier riding up Zwift mountain at a lower wattage and easier gearing, than it would be riding up an actual mountain, in my opinion.

what trainer do you use?

HI Hubbers!

Speaking to some fellow cyclists over the weekend got me thinking - should indoor training contribute to your weekly goals (distance or time) on Strava?

Give me your opinions!

Erm yes... The few extra Kms one might get from riding on an IDT is outweighed by the sheer boredom and soul destroying monotony....

I have 4 weeks of IDT coming up, not by choice, sitting on the damned thing for a 4 hours LSD deserves a friggen BJ, not just Strava miles!

Counts to my TSS scores, so no reason why will not count on strava

yip, i put everything on strava...  even a manual entry for a treadmill run

the only thing is to be honest and let your workout stats resemble the actual amount of effort that you put in...   Not cool to set the Kickr on low resistance, pedal 45km/hr at 150W and claim 60km's for a 1h30 Zone 1 ride.

Well look, its about TSS or Suffer Score as Shapes says.

150W for 60mins will give you a suffer score of x, thats that...

Here's another way of looking at it.

Other that the watopia, zwift is modeled on real world courses (london and richmond) with the same distances. I cant comment on the reality of the climbs, as I have not ridden them in real life.

Using a smart trainer with automatically adjusted resistance, I think it is as close to and actual ride as you will get, barring the sunburn, cars and wind.

Anyhoo, I have made peace with the fact that zwift does not count towards challenges on strava.

Then there is the comparative gains of spending time on a trainer vs on the road...

much different on a resistance controlled (smart) trainer :whistling:

Exactly my point! I (and many other people not on controlled trainers) can sit at whatever wattage we want, but still get the meters.

those are then just junkier than junk miles.

Never used a normal trainer so I wasnt aware of that. Would make it even more boring that way than trainers already are.

I have experienced some real pain on my smart trainer climbing in the Alps etc, so while it may not count towards strava it sure does count for fitness.

Then just put your bike in a stand, connect a drill to your crank and Tool Time yourself to your hearts content.

Look, unless you are winning the Strava challenge, who give crap.... Its a Strava challenge FFS, its like moaning about the guy who fudges his 14 handicap to be a 16 and win.... nobody really cares.

BS IDT miles won't help him/her win any KOMs nor Races...

Does it really matter?

It depends on what the person's goal is... for me it's time in a specific (power) zone for a set duration. Whatever distance I get, is what I get - irrespective of the resistance used on the trainer.

I don't have a smart trainer, but rather one that has 4 different resistance settings. I use a crank-based PM and speed sensor to record all my IDT activities. The distance is irrelevant - 300W at 60rpm or 300W at 105rpm will give the same result, but differing distances.

Well not really, as I ride to programmes with set wattages. I don't ride around Zwift island because I'm bored.

But same applies to a top end trainer and ERG mode. If you're in a training programme it will hold you to a specific wattage regardless of incline/gearing/cadence.

Edit!

Does it really matter?

Does it really matter?

In the fairness of a climbing challenge, yes. Because on a real 8% climb you can't sit at 50%/70%/whatever FTP and still pedal up the hill, albeit at a slow pace.

Like Patch says, it's a Strava challenge, it's not the end of the world.
