Going up the switchback climb at Conties 2 weeks ago, I came across a snake sticking it's head out from a mouse hole in the middle of the single track (this was about 3 turns from the top). As I approached, it pulled its head back into the hole. I am not sure if it was a cobra or a mole snake. I did not care to find out either way.

I just kept on pedaling...

this is a common occurrence here on bikehub

I just don't understand how the snake catcher can hold the snake up with the head so close to him, I'll get so bewerig holding it up so close to me I'll pas out with the puffy falling right on top of me

Its not near to him

The camera has affected the perspective. Its big but not so big as it appears

Anyway stop being such a wuss

Its a snake...so what

Same has happened to me, at Meerendal. I literally almost shat my pants. F**king worst thing you can imagine.

Please teach me this photography technique - for (slightly) unrelated purposes.

The puff adder average size is about 40 inches (1 meter) in total length but larger specimens up to 75 inches (190 cm) and weighing over 13.2 lbs (6.0 kg) with a girth of 16 inches (40 cm) have been reported.

The size of the snake is irrelevant to me... It's the size of the bite that matters.

Taking pics of your snake and enlarging it could be frowned on, even on Friday

While huffing and puffing up a hill with the sun in my eyes, i almost greeted mr Puffadder , wanting to cross the road.  After this incident, i was wide awake on the bike.. Apologies for the bad quality. I am still trying to figure out the Gopro sessions 5 settings and software, for uploads. (Set quality to a higher setting when viewing for clarity)

Looks like such a beautiful place to ride!

Also, mooi puffy.

Beautiful snake, is that the road past Longhill?

Commonly used by fishermen  , taught my daughter this trick with her first bass

Forced perspective.. That snake is nowhere near as big as it looks in that photo. If you follow snakes of south Africa Facebook group you will see photos like this dismissed time and time again

In this case its just shitty photography.

So if the perspective has been skewed, why does the 25litre bucket that is even closer to the camera look like it will not be big enough for that snake.

Any snake that is going to fill a 25lit bucket is bloody big
