ChrisF Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I'm also on Salazopyrin and Prednisone. Just over a month into treatment and the Salazopyrin seems to have started working. I'm also on Salazopyrin and Prednisone. Just over a month into treatment and the Salazopyrin seems to have started working. First - read the reply from Talus ... My reply is from a different perspective - been with a rhumatologist since 1999. I have Psoriatic arthritis 1st treatment - methotrexate, and Veltex .... liver did not like this one bit, and was stopped after only a few weeks 2nd treatment - salazopyrin and Veltex ... took LOTS of Veltex back then !!! After a few years the meds were less and less effective .... When you NEED these meds it is a heaven send ! Not much fun in exercising with sore joints, so I did less and less ... even sold my bike (did regular rides before the diagnosis) Less exercise and more office hours = larger waist = more load on the joints = more pain = less exercise ..... took 10 years to reach "morbidly obese" .... By now I was on my third treatment - biologics (injecting myself once a week with Enbrel). With good meds and no exercise I hardly ever used Veltex .... Slightly adjusted what we eat, lost a few kilos .... but still convinced myself that it is too painful to exercise 2 March 2016 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes - ever wondered why it is called a "life style" disease ? THIS was the turning point for us. I have been co-operating 100% since 9:00 on the morning of 2 March 2016 - NO and ifs or buts .... From 100kg down to 84 kg, peaked at 108kg a few years earlier. Proper diabetic eating plan WORKS !! Steadily it became easier to walk stairs. Borrowed a friends bike to see if this was an option .... After a month I bought a mountain bike. Started with 1km rides - YES, a measily 1 000 m at a time. Did that for a few weeks, gradually got up to 2km. All the while closely monitoring the impact this has on my joints the next day. NOT taking any Veltex to treat over practicing !! By October 2016 I took a chance and tried cycling to work, all of 4,2km, but with two nasty hills. I would get off and walk those hills. February this year a bought another mountain bike for the commute - better gearing for those hills. Now I dont have to walk the hills any more. My body fat came down to 17% with this "exercise" routine. DONT underestimate the importance of eating right and moderate exercise ! Some days I leave the car at work and cycle home, then cycle back the next morning. (need the car at work to go to project sites) Trying to do this twice a week. On Saturdays I do a short ride with the 5 year old. Reality check - NO WAY that I can do a group ride with others. I simply dont have the knees for it any more !! It really takes a mind shift to accept that the days I did 50km per day 5 days a week is gone for good .... Took me a long time to get to grips with the hard reality - I have two choices: - sit around, get fat, die early ... - ride as much (little) and as slow as my arthritis allows .... Words can not explain the thoughts that went through my mind when I was on top of the hill at Meerendal on Saturday, looking out over the 12km loop .... SO beautiful !! REALLY wanted to go for it !! But it would be beyond stupid to put my knees through that NOW .... I need to keep it slow and steady, and gradually increase my distances .... If I hurt my knees/wrists/joints now it will take more than a few Veltex to recover. And Arthritis is a fickle mistress ... some days you feel good, then it flares up again .... Moral of the story - there IS a time and a place for meds - as and when prescribed by a doctor. But using it daily to mask pains is NEVER a good idea !!! There comes a time and a place to step back and practice as much as your body can cope with .... MAN it is hard on the ego to take that step ....

Rocket-Boy Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Hi All, Dont know if its been answered in the string somewhere else but it would be interesting to get a list of what comprises an NSAID - and in generic terms not medical terms. DisprinPanadoetcMyprodol ? I assume this is in a different class are they all pill based or are their creams etc that you need to be careful of.Guys Im a little stressed here, my wife often takes a myprodol or panado before she goes running if its hot. She gets a pounding headache every time(regardless of hydration) which puts an end to any race she does. Is there anything that is safe for her to take in those situations? she doesnt handle heat well at all and it would pretty much put an end to any exercise she does.

But she should really find the cause of the headaches - that's not normal.
GaryvdM Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 It has always bothered me how fokes in the ultra distance world take Ibuprophen like they are smarties. I'll be posting that article any time I hear of people doing that.

NotSoBigBen Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Back in my running days, I have since wisened (spelling) up , I remember my brothers brother-in-law and a few of his mates often ran with Besenol nearby and took in the second half of ultra marathon races. Never understood it but it takes all sorts I guess .....

Never understood it but it takes all sorts I guess .....Besenol is not an NSAID - it's paracetemol/orphenadrine - neither of those are NSAIDS. Orphendrine is an anti cholinergic drug and blocks nerve impulses... can't see that as beneficial during running - would have to do some homework on that.

Those okes at that time 89/90 probably knew no better and it may just have been a placebo for them but they swore by it
V12man Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Those okes at that time 89/90 probably knew no better and it may just have been a placebo for them but they swore by itPlacebo's work pretty well in general.... 89/90 most NSAIDS were still classified as prescription only, so were much harder to get too - script only - now a lot of them are OTC. I used to dish them out like smarties at 1Bn/7Med in '88/89 - won't do that now - probably did some damage with hindsight.... not a good thought at all - but we didn't know better at the time - now we do.
Rocket-Boy Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Panado should be ok - Myprodol should be avoided. But she should really find the cause of the headaches - that's not normal. She went in for a battery of tests a few years ago after she ran the surfers marathon and ended up vomiting for 3 days straight. They did all kinds of blood work, her GP who is a wonderful thorough doctor freaked out completely about her white cell count being so massively elevated. So off to the specialists we went, tons more tests done and the elevated white cell count returned to normal after a few days. They found nothing at all but charged me R800 a time just to tell us the results of the latest tests. To be sure there wasnt something sinister lurking around I took her for tests every 6 months after that for the next 2 years. It seems that when she exercises and gets very hot that her body freaks out completely and does all kinds of weird stuff to her. Taking the myprodols and limiting the distances she run to 10km or less has kept it mostly under control though.

I will ask around if anybody I know knows something about this - I will respond directly if I find something out that might be useful.
Mamil Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 We used to call them Auntie Bes and I used to pop one exactly as described - in the second half of an ultra. Whether or not it made a difference I don't know - still suffered for hours on end in that road running craze. Placebo's work pretty well in general.... 89/90 most NSAIDS were still classified as prescription only, so were much harder to get too - script only - now a lot of them are OTC. I have exhausted our options with local specialists unfortunately so unless someone can recommend some tests we are pretty much out of options for now.

If we finish a run late (i.e. trail run on Saturday morning or time trial on Tuesdays) she gets a headache afterwards. Replacing lost fluid directly after a summer time trial, for instance downing 500mL of water sorts this out most of the time. Otherwise it is Panando for a day or 2. So I will be following this with interest..

The scary thing is that she overheats even in the winter! When she was younger she would run twice a day and a whole lot faster than she does now, she didnt used to have any issues. She is 36 and not overweight at all, generally quite fit and doesnt spend all day sitting at work. Its very strange and quite worrying at the same time.
