Got the sarcasm loud and clear. Just not intending to respond in kind.

Criticize a blokes comprehension when you can't pick up blatant sarcasm - sheesh that's rich... :whistling:

It will mean a better quality field at Epic, less drop outs to.

Will increase tourist revenue in the area.So maybe a good thing.

Maybe they should make The Munga the qualifying event   :w00t:

I find it ironic (or is that moronic?) that the same people who have their panties in a knot about the 'corporate golfing types' buying their way into the Epic (and most of them completing it btw) are outraged at a proposed format that aims to bring the best of the best to the Epic. I guess the keyboard ninjas know better...

The Epic is a business and is run like one (btw, I think they run a good

ship!)

After all, finishing the Epic does not make you a complete cyclist unless

you have finished the Argus!!

what are you on about?

Who is saying foreign riders is a bad thing or should be limited in any way? or that the epic should not be a world class premier event??

If your reading and comprehension skills fall short, send it to a mate and ask them to read my questions and comments amd give you a second, less controversial interpretation.

okee dokee, the Comic sans is to say, "don't take this too seriously".

So what you're saying is that it's a pity that the Epic is growing up from a ~80% ZA event to an actual global thing. Pity for the 80% ZA MTBers* who actually ride it, sure, but if it ever wants to be an actual "Tour de France" then they need to make it a more professional event. By that I mean the field needs to be more pro, not just full of okes who have the cash, a bike and a buddy with the same. For instance, the winners this year didn't really come to win it. Most of the XC riders have treated it as a great race to get their training up ahead of the season (very few actual marathon pros out there).

So ja, I get what you're trying to say, but things move on. Let's hold a pity party because of netflix the local DVD store is going to get shut down.

* I say this proudly as someone who has done 0 epics (I just don't see the value in doing the race) but I'm a huge fan of what it has done for itself, it's founder and local mtbing. To me it is massively overhyped, and to be dead honest not as hard as it is made out to be. Uh mean this guy has a finishers medal (and, AFAIK three springbok props have finished the race, take that you backline gazelles)

Pricing will probably be in Dollars or Euros and make it unaffordable to locals

At current exchange rates, the Rand price is ironically more expensive than the Dollar price.

Similarly I have never done it, nor planned to or crying about that I wont be able to (bad time of year for me, and overprived imho)
My original post was actually litered with ? marks, as I was merely interested in what the plan is, because as you can see in responses to the post, there are ppl who "plan" to do this two years in advance.
So shoot me for asking a simple set of questions about the supposed tdf of mountain biking.

Ps: and nowhere did i say its a pity the epic has grown to the brand it has; thats pure nonsense. Merely asking how if at all local riders will slot into its future, if thats a bit more bite sized for you.

Outrage? Asking how if at all local riders will slot into new format is hardly outrage.

Sho man, that race is bloody tough and not to be underestimated.

the trans cape is basically an epic clone, you know the old epic, knysna to cape town. for the old timers who want to do the concept, but without all massive entry fee, the hoopla, hype and razzmatazz!

(then ASSG bought it, and put all that back.)

we need to start another one!

With ASG in the mix, TransCape won't see me again

Once upon a time.....

There was the CAPE EPIC

Then there was the Swiss Epic

that's 2 Epics to choose from

Now there is the Pioneer down under

that's 3 Epics to choose from

Now thanks to ironman

I fear Epic is going to become more common

I don't mean to detract from the Epic, it's an extremely challenging event but part of its allure imo was that it was a one off annual event....

Same could be said for IM and look at it today...pretty common but no less challenging

Yet there is KONA which seems to give tryathletes a bigger boner than no sleeves and compression socks.

I am pretty sure the IM guys have a medium term plan to replicate the existing successful model in MTB. Their shareholders would have insisted on one considering the acquisition costs.

If the supply outweighs the demand, we will simply see them pull the plug on an event or two.

Yes, we as Rand earning Zupta bitches might feel aggrieved by this whole IM thing, BUT investment in our sport is not a bad thing. And like I said before, if this event prices itself out of our reach, all the better of the J2C, Pioneers and who knows what other events might pop up to fill the gap.
