I'm amused that these discussions always bring out a 'race-ist' or 2 that believe we should all be hippie, trail riding coffee experts and not want to test or push ourselves for any reason .... luckily I'm old enough not to give a rat's ring and do my own thing regardless  :whistling:

If I had the money or any other option I would love to do an Epic for sure

The CPT pricing have followed a similar pattern to ACE with double digit increases year on year iirc. They have even adopted the highly controversial clover-leaf format too. The event, despite its attractive pricing compared to ACE, have never attracted a sell-out field, and was probably one of the motivators to adopt the clover-leaf format, as more trails closer to the race village = a better experience opposed to long distances over a lot of dirt roads. Interestingly I have never seen a "100% sold out" sign on Joberg2C either, also a point to point race.

clover-leaf format?

Using a central point / hub as village and running two or more days rides out and back from here instead of having a new village every day

Nah... I don't like coffee and I hate hippies. Pushing oneself can very much be done in a non race environment too. Maybe doing it at a race every once in a while, not every second weekend?

I lived in NZ for over a year and did 1 marathon race but I rode my bike every day. I did coast to coast, trans NZ and the Remarkable double-single cone traverse as well as a few #enduros and fun races.

I am not against racing by any means..

My gripe is more about people entering the same events over and over, then complaining about the same things at said events over and over.

Still on my bucket list

Two of my Saffer mates did it a few years ago. Their feet were destroyed from all the walking. They are average riders, but finished. Apparently a longer travel bike is the way to go. The wives loved staying in the ski resorts...

Yes I'm nitpicking but I think your 79% should be closer to 85%

Dropout rate not wildly out of line with the average of 14% over all the years

correct, should be 84.2% my bad

and very much in line with historical figures

J2c is sold out this year - but I think, as you rightly say, this is the first time...

Still on my bucket list [emoji106]

And it has the flow option..where you can skip the big big climbs and take the ski lift up..also if you don't finish a stage you can start the next day[emoji39]
