Import duties on indoor trainer

I see indoor trainers are very reasonable on chain reaction cycles with free delivery. Brings me to the question, apart from 14% VAT , do anyone know what amount of duties I will pay on such an item?

Which IDT are you looking at. As Jurgens mentioned some of those IDT are pretty heavy. Have you looked at the classifieds there are loads of good deals there.

hi Jurgens, seems like chainreaction has free delivery, except if I am not understanding their offer right. thanks for links.

The shipping will be pricey due to the weight.

Ex:

The Elite Turbo Muin Smart B+ Trainer = 394.49 GBP

Shipping for this costs 80GBP for DHL (I wouldn't trust the other 2 options due to post office handling the shipping once in SA)

Your total cost will be +- 9k landed.

They do have free delivery, but that would work through Royal Mail and once it hits SA, SAPO(South African Post Office).

Based on experiences with SAPO I would try and avoid them as far possible by going with a courier.

I ordered mine from CRC, duties are just VAT (add 15.4% to the purchase price excluding shipping).

Apparently (don't hold me to this), because of the weight and size, these are automatically shipped with DHL. I however did pay for DHL and I still saved nearly R2000 off local retail price. And it came in 3 days.

I would not buy a sophisticated Smart trainer OS and ship it here. As they are so full of electronics it's one of the items that I think is worth having a local warranty on. The other is a dropper post.

Unless the saving is half the local cost I steer clear.

But there are opportunities to save when the OS supplier has stock and the ZAR is going through a stronger, or not as weak, phase.

Mostly items like trainers get shipped via DHL rather than post on the free delivery.

I bought one last month from CRC. Paid 100 bucks for shipping. It was just a basic fluid trainer (Brand X). Only paid VAT. It was deliverred within a week.

No Duties on these, just the shipping is really expensive. The KICKR clocks in at almost 30kg. Also, we have the pain of doing ICASA registration for each new model due to Bluetooth. Also, support on electronics is a reality. After sales service can not only be for the duration of the 12 month warrantee, we actually employ a full time person to ensure trainers are serviced and supported within a small time frame.

We also keep all spare parts that can go on a trainer i.e Belts, bushing kits etc... It is worth supporting the local distributors in some cases.
