It's amazing how much motivation you can draw from getting out onto the road or gravel without Strava, watch, cycle computer and just enjoy the very same routes you usually try burn through. Another way of getting your mojo back is to introduce a new person to the cycling/MTB game, show them some routes, get them interested and then when they start whipping your fat ass you have no choice but to regain your mojo with interest.Wax on, wax off.

Put away all the SHIIT (electronics) go as simple as possible ,,stop trying to chase times and just RIDE, ride like a kid, ride because you enjoy it

I didn't listen it cost me 2 years, ran out of give a vaaark and interest ,,,now I just play, vaaark around and cruise,,I'm starting to remember and I am getting excited to play

It helps my 8 year old is kicking my ass on 10 kms and she loves,,loves the bike

Come on - be honest... your daughter kicks your ass over every distance from 5m to 10km... she is a machine... :)

My daughter wants me to take her running every day... so far I have avoided this....

The void

It's normal

Watch movies, chill, reconnect with friends, read, plan a road trip, spend quality time with loved ones

The hunger will rise when you're mentally and physically ready for the next challenge

Am going through a stage right now due to change in location and circumstance (and a long overseas trip followed by a broken shock) where I am miles off where I was even 8 weeks ago. Really battling with motivation. I really like to give it horns when I train and I know any attempt at a KOM today is going to be a disappointment. So I am going to Have Total Fun Unusually and be thankful my bike is fixed and the sun is shining.

(Disclaimer: further shock issues may result in a post edit)

Coffee runs.

Coffee runs to places you've never been to.

Do a bit of touring - even one overnight stop.

Try a differing type of cycling/bike.

But if you want to put the bike away for a while, do it. Reconnect with those around you and the other you, that isn't a cyclist.

We humans need "something" to work towards ... or that couch becomes just too cumphy ....

BUT - you dont want to burn out on one sport either ....

It has been mentioned before - alternate with different goals, possibly even different sports / projects.

OK, so that was the least fun two hours on my steed since the Great 100 Miler Bonk of 2015. Time for couch and videos!

and still, a bad day in the saddle beats a good day in the office ...

This thread reminds me of my photography journey ....

new kit ... learn learn learn .... FUN !!

join a club

learn a LOT more ...

competitions ... get your but handed to you in no uncertain terms ...

more competitions .... and gradually get better at it., and finally win a few competitions ...

and suddenly it becomes a pain to take photos !  If it is not a winning photo the shutter does not get pressed .... and you end up with weekends away without any pics ....

Had to take a step back and "force" myself to take "memory" pics.

Took more than a year before I regained the will to take quality pics.  Fortunately now take lots of memory pics, and pack the DSLR's for when I want to get serious .....

back to cycling - for all the benefits of Strava (and similar) .... this should not become the focal point of cycling .....

Had very much the same experience, and from what others say on here I am now realizing that it is a thing for almost every serious cyclist.

I probably handled it quite the wrong way cause I have a all or nothing mentality I either go 100% or I cant be bothered. So instead of just finding another healthy outlet for the pressure I started sulking about the fact that I felt miff!

The sulking in turn lead to other destructive behaviors, aimlessly spending hours on the coach drinking beer and feeling sorry for myself, at this point a mate that had seen the whole thing unfold suggested I try another sport for variety. I started playing a bit of low level club rugby and within no time I felt the burning desire to get super fit again.

Now whenever I feel the blues creeping up I go play a bit of rugby and its like a magic cure, within two weeks I realize that I am too old for that sh*t but I do relish the competitive nature of sports, and that is all the motivation I need to start riding again

Unless I worked in the abattoir, today's ride was no comparative to a job, sadly. . Think lawn bowls might be cheaper and less painful!

Thanks for all the responses. Very interesting to see the different approaches. The thing that is worrying me the most is losing my hard earned fitness. That ctl is plummeting! Came off my big event at 112, it's now 69. I am still riding and most of the time I'm enjoying it. But I am finding it very hard to do indoor sessions and to ride on my own. And even harder to eat well and my next goal is 3 day jock tour, I need to lose some weight, not put any on!

I kind of added paddling to my timetable but I've only been twice! Enjoyed both times I went, so not sure why I'm feeling so lazy! I like being that person that gets up, no matter what and trains with enthusiasm, I don't want to lose it completely.

I think I'll give myself another easy week and only do what I feel like doing and then try again and be disciplined. I'm not competitive at all in terms of results but I usually like training hard. I get that I probably do need to rest a bit. I trained really hard for 6 months and didn't really take that much time off between the years. But I really want to utilise my fitness. Very torn.

Road rides are more enjoyable for me right now but really struggling to find people to ride with in the mornings and I am worried about pushing my luck on my own.

But it seems like it's quite normal and I probably shouldn't be too hard on myself. Clearly though I need to make more cycling friends.
