Happened to me recently. There are 2 Pyga stockists in my area. Wanted to buy a Pyga - one shop called the factory to confirm cost, colours and availability. The other offered me 10k off a 1 year old bike that they had in stock.

Sigh. 2 minutes is all it takes to pick up the phone and call.

We are looking for a Sales Manager at the moment, and this is the biggest thing that is missing fro all the candidates.

"Don't sell me what you have, sell me what I need."

Shortly after leaving school I work at a LBS.

There was a particular client that would come in every now and then, asking questions RE a range of bikes and then asking how they compared to others, etc , etc, etc.

Long story short, I played open cards with him RE the bike, his intentions of riding, encouraged him to look at other LBS's bikes/brands and make a holistic call on what he wanted.

Anyway, no one else paid him much attention (very casually dressed, not flashy in anyway) ..... he walked one day on a cold rainy day and bought the most expensive MTB in the store on the spot and I helped him load it in his Porsche.

He bought the bike that was right for him at the end of the day.

I find that if you take your recently serviced bike to another shop and they complement the up keep then your shop does well.

Also, I just dig the Cloete's at Crown cycles.

I say we all apply...we've seen his beloved bike, maybe we can all get one working there... ;)

First you have to sell that bike back to him ;)

Had a similar experience working at a bikeshop in London. guy came in, had a good honest chat about his needs and the bikes in the shop, and their price brackets vs product offering, he test rode the bottom of the range city bike and bought it. Spent time in the shop before and after that. Came in next week to buy the top of the range model also.  Then came in and started looking at top end road bikes and if I remember correctly, he also bought one of those. I was a bit bowled over re his continuous purchases until one of the till guys told me he had a black card from a certain bank. At that stage that meant that he had unlimited funds available to him - could buy a damn island if he wanted to. He liked the shop's vibe and chats.

Competitive pricing and knowledge of the availability of parts in stock for me. I seem to have bad luck with most things I buy as when I check available stock with the shop I will be told they have the item and when I get there it turns out they don't have it!

You'll know it when you ''feel'' it...

If that makes any sense. I like Tygerberg Cycles (yes Specialized) they are friendly, fun, helpful, do a great job servicing my bike answer all my questions, get back to me on advice.
