Were you in News Cafe at the Boardwalk late lunchtime on Monday? Saw someone in there all strapped up from a bike crash.

Hope the recovery goes well

There was a lady on my flight to Jozi that had some serious facial road rash. Musta been a biggie.

Nah not me, I was on a plane then.

I did hear that someone hit a dog, and came off very second best though

Broken....first IM! Race day all went according to plan until 8km in the run! Boom! Exploded.....kept well below my power zones on bike as I like to overbike normally....managed to limp home in 12:28....maybe next year I will try again...what a journey!

okay so i am finally home and had some time to think about my 'race'.  This was truly one of my best experiences at an event with all the support and cheering, including the days leading up to the event.

The swim at PE was amazing, and although i did a few weird turns coming back for some reason i actually came in in a time i guessed before the race to be my ideal swim 1h15.

The bike was such an enjoyable and scenic route, there was lots of cheering for a bike leg and i especially enjoyed the group of people at the 25km mark. The wind coming back was a bit hard, especially the final 20km when you hit that open section, but not that bad considering the wind speeds PE can deliver. The bad thing i saw on the bike leg was how many people draft in groups. i know the roads get congested and it is impossible not to gain some advantage, but you can clearly see someone trying to stay clear of a draft zone.  Anyway, not my problem to worry about their guilt feelings when their medal hangs around their necks.  i completed my bike leg in 6h16 which i was happy with considering how my legs felt after the bike leg.

i needed that feeling as i've never ran a full marathon, furthest i've done was a 30km in training, and by no means do i see myself as a runner. with the sun still out i started with a relaxed pace, from previous 70.3's i know i do not perform well when the sun is beating down as i sweat a lot and usually looks like my hat is leaking water, and waited for the sun to go down.  the boards they put on the road is a bag of mixed feelings for me, its good to see the km's ticking down but seeing the 8km mark and the 36km mark next to one another, you start to think how the hell am i going to get there.  i had a plan on focusing on sections between waterpoints though and refused to stop if i wasn't at a waterpoint, i would collect a drink and maybe something to chow down and start running again.  the best feeling on the run is when you can finally say 'screw you' to the board that reads loop and go down the one that reads finish. you are so tired, but you cant help it to smile and to lift your arms in the air. i finished the run in 4h48 and the race in 12h44 with nothing but positive feelings it my hart, i never went through a dark patch where i felt i had to stop or something.

i already said it, but this was such an amazing race. i told my wife the day i entered i only want to do this at least once in my life, she asked me after the race how i felt about that statement and tried to answer her in a way to keep my options open as i knew then i would return to this race in the not to distant future.

Swam far better than the amount of training I put in to beach at 1:16

T1 Get foot patched up at medical tent

Cycle broke me physically as my left knee was shot by the time I got off the bike in 7:14

Returned to sender everything I had consumed within 4km of the run making me want to quit every time I took a step for the first 13km. After getting a jacket in my special needs bag and warming up again my spirit lifted and then I knew it was only physical pain, and that type of pain I know how to deal with, so walked a lot and shuffled a little to complete the final leg in 5:31 At the end everything from feet , ankles, knees, hips, stomach, neck etc all were hurting but strangely enough when I heard “You are an Ironman” on the red carpet 14:26 after starting I was pain free.

Thanks to all volunteers & spectators!

When do you guys think entries will open and dates secured? I see last year it was by 19 April.

Entries normally open the day after the awards evening so should be open.

They opened earlier than the 19th last year but changed the date of the event hence it appears it only opened on 19th.

Does entries sell out quickly?

No.. think they only sold out in March this year. If you are on the IM mailing list you will be notified when there are only 100 slots left etc. like the Facebook page and get updates.

I saw a lot more drafting this year than previous years so maybe that’s why.

Well when the winner says he's drafting, it doesn't leave much more to the imagination for the rest.

On the bike I felt incredible but I had to be patient and smart. I knew I was the strongest in the group, as every time I shouted for someone else to have a turn on the front they all shook their heads. I eventually sat up and slowed down to move to the back of the pack so the others could do some of the work. While I was at the back I got stung by a bee in my eye socket under my visor. I could only see through one eye and all I could think was ‘how am I going to run with one eye closed?’ Luckily it didn’t swell up too badly, but boy, did it sting!
