Flip, glad you got to do the ride.

But how often do we take things at face value for being the real deal. I have never checked my tyres on my car serial numbers!

Taking things at face value from a shop is an important point - it is also easily open to potential exploitation, particularly online. Whatever the reason for my tyre failure, surely the safety measures and research gone into developing the product should have taken that into account. That is why you go choose Pirelli/Michellen etc. over a no name brand car tyre. It doesn mean they cant fail, just damn unlikely to under the conditions it was meant to be used in. That is why selling real product versus a grey or inferior product without clearly stating that for the consumer that there could be a difference, is literally a life or death sales pitch.

Just a note: Being a grey import doesn't imply it is inferior quality. The grey tyre would likely have come from the same factory as the tyre in your favourite LBS - just via different channels.

To me it sounds like you are saying you bought counterfeit tyres - that is something different

Sure. Having said that, at this point I don't  really know what I bought - the tyres are being looked at by Vittoria in Italy at present.

All from CWC.

According to the distributor, if there is no serial number, they are counterfeit and are not supported by them or the manufacturer.

FYP. Grey imports would still have serial numbers in them as they'd have been put there at the time of manufacture. Grey imports are still made by the same guys.

I doubt Vittoria has 2 production lines per type of tyre - one with serial numbers, one without.

It doesn't sound like the tyre comes without a serial number.... it sounds like the serial number has been removed (sanded off or similar) for whatever reason.

I didn't say counterfeit, my quote has been edited.

Mine had no abrasion marks, there was no number at all and nothing removed, that is why they have been sent away.

OK so checked mine and have some pics which I'll add tomorrow. They came with Vittoria board, Vittoria branded strapping, a little leaflet which says to read carefully before using. Tyres each have 2 white numbers stamped inside. I was expecting a moulded type serial number so checked for any signs of removal of such and found nothing.

Same here.

So it seems my CTCT bargain was indeed a bargain.. :whistling:

Wanted to install a new tire (Saguaro) yesterday and found the serial number scraped off. Pictures are of a brand new one - no serial number - and the old one, where you can see a serial number.

Did anyone come to some sort of conclusion with a supplier or distributor on this?

Interested to know before I take it further.

Thanks.

Think I'll go to CWC first since I bought it from them and see how it goes.

I don't think it's fake - came with the proper board and band, but why the hell is the serial number scraped off?

Also looks like some of the tire cord fabric could be damaged in the process of removing the number.
