XT Brakes - tightening up...

I have the exact opposite problem, my back break remains slack, properly bled and topped out- the breaking  braking power is negligible when under weight (ie- off a bike stand) thought it was pads; nope; oil, nope..... not sure what to look at further.

I think the idea is that it should not break....  lol.  :whistling:

Hi All,

So I just got back from Sani where I ended up riding 1/2 of day 2 and day 3 with only a rear brake, not great.

So this is what I experienced. I have  Shimano XT brakes, recently serviced at cycletech. About 50km into day 1 I realized my front brake was tightening up as I was riding but pushed through to the end. Asked one of the local mechanics to take a look. day 2 the decent was fine but then started tightening again. by the 70km mark there was zero play in the lever and the brake was tight on the caliper. flipped the bike over and manually opened the calipers. I then rode the rest of the way to the sea without the front brake. it worked when I needed it but if I used it I would need to stop within a few minutes to manually open the calipers to release the brake pads.

Basically the brake would not release once used and the leaver would take earlier until there was no play when braking.

It back in the shop and the feedback I have gotten is it is a problem with the lever and shimano don't carry spares so I need to replace by brakes...? for now I've opted to just have hem cleaned up and see how it goes but with Dusi2C in 3weeks time I don't want to have a repeat of my Sani experience.

Any advice?

Had the same issue also courtesy of S2C -The Race event, only my brakes was fine during all 3 days & day 2 & 3 was pretty muddy. Also have the XT M785's, Issue only noticed\picked when bike was cleaned. also followed the links supplied above, except we ended up not filing anything, just a good proper clean, bleed & new o-ring for the piston.

Two sets of XT brakes without a day of trouble...

Same here. 5 years now, 20000km on the same set of XT brakes. Bled 3 times, several sets of brake rotors and blocks, but original casing, levers and everything else.

It's been failsafe for me.

OP should have known better than to buy those pesky sram brakes, they are always trouble while shimano is always perfect.

Wait this is about a shimano brake giving troubles? but I thought they were infallible?

..... & new o-ring for the piston....

where did you get these from? Shamano says they do not supply spares and recommends the bikeshop doesn't try to service the brake leaver..

here's the fix!!!

shouldn't take longer than 1-2hours

The problem of heat causing the brakes to go on isn't something I have ever experienced on my 4 year old SLX's - they have decent size reservoirs unlike super small/ light things like Formula R1's. The easy trail side fix if this happens on the R1's is to release a little fluid from the bleed screw at the lever. I am not sure if the same would work on Shimano though.

well for starters the SLX doesn't have the "stroke adjust" pin, where i assume dirt is getting into the fluid.

as per shimano's tech docs, the brakes should be bleed regularly(i think every 6months), i've now made it a point to do mine every season, this way less "dirt" can get stock in the chamber and on the piston, technically this is what you sand down.

i've experience the same, running slx M666 xt m785 and xt m8000. the M785 were the most finicky

...en hy is eintlik Engels (for reals)... tsk tsk tsk... terrible speller...

Whitters - I'm sure you can find an o-ring somewhere (doesn't have to be a bike shop). Let me know if you don't come right; we have a supplier for those kind of items.

leave it in the sun for a few minutes, and my guess is the problem will return, i've tried this too.

without sanding anything i just cleaned(proper) out, it only took one ride in the blazing cape town sun... and the problem returned.

guides have the same problem, i know of multiple sets. even here on the hub, and just like the repair of sanding/cleaning its fix is the same

problem is it's apparently it is not just an o-ring its a cone-shaped rubber washer...

this is exactly what happens. the advise I got was if it gets sticky you can pore water on it and it'll relax...
