Hi there

I have recently purchased a second hand specialized bike. Is it true that specialized can only be serviced at specialized/ concept stores or can I take it to my usual guy down the road? I dont have the original receipt for the bike.

Contrary to some of the myths and legends out there, Specialized are just bikes like any other brand and can be serviced by any bike shop. As droo mentioned, only the proprietary parts such as brain (which only Epics and some other models have), have to be serviced by Specialized, but as far as I know that is done by Spez HQ in Stellenbosch, and not your local concept store - they just send the parts there.

Surely your LBS can send the brain in though?

From what I've heard they don't like receiving stuff from random LBS. The LBS takes the suspension to the closest concept store which sends it down. It might be something to do with the contract with couriers?

Correct. Not sure why, possibly to do with the shocks being a bit fiddly to strip and reinstall.

$$$?

Buddy of mine ended up paying 5k for the 150 hour service on his Camber.

- Front and Rear shock

- All pivots replaced

- New race face bb

He looked like a ghost that was about to throw up when he was telling me the story.

I service my Spez at Trailwolf in pta, cost me about 2k, full service incl front and rear shock as well as pivots. Nothing had to be replaced though - that does make a big difference!

Thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression that they could only be serviced by highly qualified, well-connected people who only arrived when there were three wise men and a bright start in the western sky.......oh yeah, and a few donkeys.

Just bought a second hand Pyga, which then cost R3500 to service everything with quite a lot of replacement parts. I was expecting it though and factored it into the price

I don't blame you - this is of course what they want you to believe hahaha.

I bash them, yet I ride a Spaz, so I guess that makes me a horrible hypocrite! They are amazing bikes though.... that has to be said.

Thank you for the honest confession. Twenty Hail Marys and 30 lashes with a wet face-cloth. Neeext!

holy crap. is it just spez or are other MTB also so expensive to service?

The expensive part is the suspension - your 50 hour service is still okay, but the 150 hour service is the very expensive. This is of course the same on all bikes with high end suspension. The other expensive part is pivots - if they need to be replaced. So in short, no it's not just Spez - it's all high end bikes.

The one thing that does make a Specialized's service more expensive is if you have a brain which needs to be sent to Spez HQ - but this is only in Epics, and some Cambers as far as I know...
