Only thing I'm dreading about the race is the part where I have to get up at 4am (and try not to wake the 10 month old and make myself very unpopular with the mrs) to miss the traffic from Pretoria... Not a morning person

Might be easier to sleep in the spare bedroom Saturday night...has always worked for us

Jip, 4AM wakeup is not ideal, but if it means I can spend the whole day on my bicycle with other cyclists, well then it becomes a pleasure...

However, long term repercussions for waking the Minister of Home Affairs will have dire consequences for future endeavors. Spare room sleepover is a very nice suggestion...

You guys get to wake up at 4am ?

That's so nice, you get to sleep in a bit.

Some of us have to get up even earlier than that.

At least there won't be any traffic on the highway

But in all honesty I rather start early than at 9am.

For my 1st 94.7 I think I started around 9:30am and that was just a mission.

If You did not register for Double lap will it still be possible?

Depends on two things:

Can you complete your first lap before 9:39?

Do they have a system where they can check whether you have done your lap already or if you just dropped back a couple of batches to ride with some mates?

Will have to wait till sunday to see the answer to the second question...

Yip 2nd question is the major one. Have made a plan to hand off my chip but am not sure whether start number is going to raise questions.

All will be revealed on Sun

Sounds like they will be very vigilant regarding Racetec chips before the batches Load.

One way to prevent people doing unnofficial Double Laps would be to have a handheld chip reader in the loading pens to check for any chips that already crossed the finish line earlier the day that is not in the DL batch. Surely easy to write a quick script to run the check.

Plus you don't have to check every chip, just the guys with Batch Numbers much higher up than the batch being loaded.

Would actually be curious to know what the main driver is to be more vigilant with checking for Racetec chips and race numbers...

Is it to reduce the number of freeloaders who haven't paid at all for the event or to reduce the number of unofficial second lappers?

I would think that the freeloaders are the bigger problem. Unofficial second lappers might only amount to less than 100, whereas freeloaders could be much more IMHO.

So bleak I can't ride this year anymore.

Had a not so gentle lie down just after the last water point on the 55km MTB race this weekend and have a broken wrist and cheekbone :(

No cycling for me for a few weeks

So breaking the fall with your face was not as effective as advertised?

Heal up soon dude!!

Lap two starts at 09:30, so will feel like dinner time by the time we get back to the gazebo.

On top of the freeloaders/unofficial double lappers, I think it's also a case of wanting more official finishers to compete with CTCT.

Yes you can if as someone mentioned you are back by the time the last group starts.

There is a group that has registered for a double lap and they part of a group that gets an early start time.

If you have not registered for that group, you will have to start in your assigned group and once finished, join the next group about to start.

RaceTec say they will detect you are doing a second lap and will ignore your second time. I would keep your chip with you as it’s a requirement but not wear it where the mat will detect your second start.

Good luck.

The checking of numbers is to ensure everyone starting has officially entered, I am sure we get some freeloaders but we do remove them when found.

The timing chip is obviously for timing but also to give live stats as to how many cyclists have started, have reached points on the route and have finished. We are also starting to record electronically cyclist who are collected by a sweep vehicle.
