Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge - #CC2017

Yup had this happen to the missus and I up steyn city climb....not 100% sure that they were doing it the second time around but they were a fast moving charity bunch, without any chariot or disabled rider etc.!

We were far right as there were people all over the place, although there was a decent space for 2 to pass abreast between my left and the next rider. All I hear is LEFT LEFT LEFT! Like no way am I going to just swerve left in a split second on a climb where most are barely keeping their balance!!! All I am doing is focusing on keeping my line and making sure the wife is ok (her foot started to cramp badly at this point). Eventually the whole lot of them took the gap and made their way through the scattered masses. So why not just do this in the first place!!! 

 

Guys and gals should think safety and consider that not everyone has the same skill level and balance, even for such a small thing like a simple pass. I thought that passing safely on a MTB on any off road terrain was a challenge, passing safely on the road with hundreds around you is nerve wrecking        . I am not saying that I do not know how to move over but it can distract or scare the next person into making a move that sends an entire bunch of riders down.

 

Anyway it was our 1st time and a last minute decision, decided to do it last Monday after doing the MTB race for the 2nd time! Had a blast and will definitely be back next year but on a road bike cause more than 5 hours on a MTB took it's toll on my joints. The goal will be for us both to make it in under 4 hours

Not in JHB though. The "fastest" lane on the highway is actually the lane on the far left, everybody seems sooooo keen to drive in the fast lane that nobody drives on the left... works for me whenever I need to head south from Snor City...

I must say that the organisation of this event is amazing!!

 

They even went as far as to section off this small piece of grass which was right in the middle of the tented entertainment area for this bird who was sitting on her eggs...

I do have a gripe though, and a big one. Guys doing second laps: please be more considerate of the other not-so-fast-and-seasoned late starters. I saw some nasties being thrown at slow riders by second lappers and it’s just not right (one windgat would constantly shout “keep left, keep your line, get out of the way” while riding 4 abreast with his mates, hogging the road). A mate of mine started in LL and he said the exact same thing. Okes, you’ve had your ride and your fun, consider the 2nd lap as a courtesy offered to you by both the organisers and late starters doing their ride.

 

Please don’t label all second lappers as a problem. Some guys go out their way to assist others along the route, by either a physical push up a hill, or to offer encouragement. These guys generally won’t be racing on their second lap nor asking people to get out of the way.

 

I am aware that Joel Stransky’s DL group have been shouting at people to get out the way... I’ve witnessed it twice in three years while on a second lap. I addressed it with them last year and was shown the middle finger by someone in their group. They claim they ride two abreast and don’t interfere with the slower riders.

My result are not showing even after going to the Expo just to validate my chip.

 

I also had a nice long day on the roa as my team mate cramped. I tried pushing him up the hills but it was still a long day. I also got a lot a of respect for the Choc guys. I helped them up the hill at Steyn City man that cart is HEAVY.

A runner maybe? 10km/h is feasible in running.

 

Nonetheless, well done for pulling through and completing it, don't know if I'd be able to spend 9hours on the road in that heat...

Reckon it was an all out attempt to get the lantern rouge. Think it is not the longest ever though.

Thought I could enjoy a break but I received an SMS congratulating me on completing the 947CC  but urging me not to rest and enter for 2018. 

 

 

Even if you didn’t manage to finish, we know what it took just to get to the start line and we really want you to complete what you started – now’s the time to commit to #CC2018 and finish it! We know that you can do it!

This lady must've taken up running and quit cycling completely. Going from a 3:09 in 2015 to a 9:11 in 2017 takes some doing.

Take it he sat there, did fokol and then sprinted for the line?

 

Wasn't there to witness the sprint, but yeah, he was so good at sitting on the back that I didn't notice him until he jumped off my wheel when I popped on the Steyn City hill. But no surprises there hey, people do it.

 

If it is true that this happened in D-Batch, I would advise Mr Sprinter Wannabe to do something different because an U23 Male should surely beat a junior rider and a 55-59 year old-toppie in the sprint if he just sat on like is being said. 

 

Definitely true, hand on heart and all that, haha. But to be fair to the laaitie and the oom, they were proper strong, so I'm glad they beat him in the sprint. He was also lanky, definitely not a sprinter type build. So no surprise that he couldn't beat them in a sprint on fresh legs.
