I have been told otherwise before. The entire group gets the same start time, doesn't matter when your chip crosses the line. I had a query once and that was what the timing company told me. They said the start line mat is just to make sure you started in the correct group. If you started in a higher group they pick it up and DQ you. This was not racetec though.

Both timing companies I’ve liaised with have the same system in use - time starts at the batch start time and finishes when crossing the finishing mats.

Championchip has the facility to view gross and nett time. Gross being the gun to mat time, while nett is mat to mat. Racetec only has gross time.

Timing mats clearly weren't on the finish line then. My lawyers will call in witnesses - LOL.

Funny reading all the posts from Grown Men, riding bikes, complaining about under privileged kids. Makes me wonder.

Next year, I'll be sure to hand out even more goodies :)

On the real - excellent race, excellent organization and lots of fun. I really enjoy the stories from the back of the field as it must be really tough, but so fulfilling when you finish.

Good Job!

Interesting as I spoke to Jono at the Engen this morning and he was pleasantly surprised he was listed in front of me in the results.

Until they rip your jersey pocket off your back trying to get it themselves making you crash in the process.

No fun if you are a girl and it this happens to you.  This actually happened before.

Don't underestimate desperation or some of them arrogance.

If you want to hand out sweets and do good, do so any day of the week at any of the million charities across SA.

Just not in a bike race with fast moving people that could get children hurt and participants hurt.

There are better and safer ways to do it.

Each to his own I suppose.

I am not sure anyone here complained about being robbed on Sunday, if they did I missed the post, nor did I see anybody complain about the dangers of people throwing sweets at them, people have however very specifically complained about kids asking for sweets. I’m not arguing that those aren’t real problems, but we are now conflating issues. Not fighting bud.

So in my 8 x 94.7 races up to date I have never done a sub 3.  Came close once (03h05) but with my second best time being (03h15) it was always going to have to be near perfect race.

Being from Bloem we are always struggling as we don't have real hills and this race just pounds you all the way.

Started in "D".  Started right in front and hung onto the leading 10-15 okes until they dropped me at Kayalami.  Another 5 guys came past and we joined forces and after just getting onto the M1 I couldn't keep up but fortunately by then we caught a very large contingent of the "B" bunch.  They didn't go that fast but I used the time to recover a bit and eat a gel and drink some Hammer nutrition.

Got to Nelson Mandela bridge at exactly 01h28 and I knew it was touch and go.  The race suddenly exploded and I decided to go with a few guys breaking away mainly for safety reasons.  From Wtikoppen is was a real drag but somehow managed to keep the average up at around 34km (I knew if it fell below 33km I had problems.

When we hit the last climb before Steyn City the average was in fact 34.5 but I was toast- still managed to hang on just.  I started to feel rejuvenated as I made my calculations in my head in terms of minutes vs km's left and realised I could almost walk the last 2km and not even a puncture would stop me.  Came in at 02h47.

The difference this year??  KICKR Interval / brutal FTP building sessions along with lots of running

And luck.

The race was so hectic that I only had time to eat 1 gel and drink one bottle of water.

Your race sounds a lot like mine.

I didnt have issues with the kids, all of them pretty well behaved standing on the side of the road.

One or two shouting "Goo Goo". Was pretty funny

Where does it stop though?

You dont want a situation like where you have to get extra people to control this.

At Sani2c they also had some incidents a year or two ago where it went from asking for chocolates to pulling people of their bikes.

I saw someone throwing a chocolate or something to two kids.

The fight was brutal but the smile on the winners face was priceless!

Well done on beating the sub-3 curse bud!

As for only drinking one bottle, this is one of the main reasons I started racing with just one. Never get close to touching the other one, but want to pay thousands of Rands to drop a few 100 grams on the bike. Drop a bottle, drop 750g, done
