Face plant woes

So after a 4 year sabbatical of riding i went to Contermanskloof yesterday and as soon as the confidence came back my front wheel washed on a double and i face planted on a rock breaking my nose and splitting my face open.

I dont want this to keep me off a bike for so long again but when that kinda pain hits you the fear sets in. Are there helmets with better face / jaw protection?

I know there are full face DH helmets but you will look like twat doing casual rides in one surely?

Wondering if there is a middle ground

Keep your faces safe out there folks

holycrap luke. maybe after your next sabbatical, try the Constantia Bikepark first ;)

you get lids with removable chinbars. Pricey stuff, but its an option in terms of giving you a choice as to whether to descend with the chinbar attached or not.

Giro switchblade

Leatt DBX 3 Enduro

Bell Super 2R and 3R

Met parachute (one with the removable chinbar)

Don't worry about looking about a twat rocking a full face while out riding. It's your noggin that needs protection. No amount of words can save your face from splitting open again. So do what you need to do until your confidence is restored. Besides, its easier to hide a blush behind a fullface + goggles :P

Capricorn!

Remember giving me DH advice 6 years ago haha. Full circle. Going to invest in a MIP helmet for sure!

Bad luck mate! Hope it doesn't put you off.

After my accident last week . . . .

I can safely say I know exactly how you feel. Prepare for some serious swelling tomorrow and Tueday. Ibuprofen helped me a lot. My stitches come out on Tuesday.

Eish not fun. I landed up with a broken nose in 3 places, hairline fracture on jaw and 70 stitches on what now is a fully pledged cleft palate. And you're right today is much worse, keen to ride safely from now on

Been there before. My upper lip did not split though, but I lost all skin on my lower lip.

Strengths boet, you are going to need it. Keep the painkiller at hand for when that lip starts throbbing in the night.
