Giant Anthem - Second hand

Hi, need some advise.

I am looking at a duel sus bike, and really like the Giant Anthem 29".

Now this is where my problem start.

New is a little above my budget at the moment, and with 2017 stock now fast disappearing it might remain the case, as 2018 models are not going to get cheaper.

Some good deals second hand, but the 29" alloy frames were known to crack at the seat tube/top tube joint. ( second hand = no warranty )

My question, is it worth buying a second hand Anthem at an affordable price and run the risk of getting a cracked frame, or cracking it myself ?

Do I look for something else that might not be such a big risk, but also not really what I want ?

an Aluminium frame can be welded and made even stronger is if does crack. It will be cheap to weld and be quicker than a warranty replacement. The repaint afterwards will probably be the expensive part but a good powdercoat job will not be too bad.

So you do have an option if frame does crack, and the fix will be less than R2k at a guess.

Anthems were only known to crack there if you had a very long extension on your seatpost.

Get the correct sized frame and its not a problem.

Not true. I cracked 2 frames and my seat post was wasn't overly extended.

Im still riding my 2013 anthem which was supposedly the worst one for cracking and have no issues. I guess its one of those things where its luck of the draw then.

Agree.

I'm 1.87cm and on an XL - some say I should be on a L.

My seat post is definitely not over extended.

Cracked my 2014 model after 7,000km

Already bought a second hand frame. Build my HT components over, only to find the frame cracked when taking it on an installation ride.

Got refunded, no problem.

Not very confidence building, but might be lucky second time round ?

I thought welding aluminum was supposed to be some kind of dark art practiced by few and really expensive to do properly?

It does take a lot of skill, something that is not readily available. However I had a old trials frame welded on the chainstay, cost me R180.00, I had it done in Rustenburg.

It can be done but yes it is best to find someone who knows what they are doing.

There are companies that specialise in it, it is not that expensive to do. I enjoy welding mild and stainless, but have had aluminium welded by a place in centurion a few times with good success
