I think wheel size matters too though.  The bigger the wheel, the smaller the average ring will usually be.

Completely agree.

My 27.5" went uphill a fair bit easier than the 29er with the same gearing. Bigger wheels need smaller chainrings if we want to be able to match cadence of a smaller wheeled bike in the same cassette sprocket etc. (if I am making sense)

Yep all about ratios.

Eg: 32t chainring on a 10-42 cassette in the easiest gear gives you a ratio of 0.76. So one turn of the crank turns your wheel 0.76 times. 0.76 of a 29 inch wheel is further than 0.76 of a 27.5 inch wheel, therefore the effort you put in is slightly more to turn the crank on the 29er than on the 27.5 bike. Effectively for you to put in the same effort on the wheel sizes it works out as below:

34t on 26er = 32t on 27.5 = 30t on 29er

36t on 26er = 34t on 27.5 = 32t on 20er

and so on... (All other things remaining equal that is).

Obviously the above is not scientifically 100% accurate, but in reality it is about right.

recently fitted an thirteen 9 - 46 - so will try out other chainring options - but was on a 32t with 11 - 42 cassette

Currently run the same and have been contemplating the 9-46 E13 would be interested to know your thoughts after testing the 9-46.

My fat ass loves my 28 with 10/42.

Will use a 30 when I go 10/46

Fun first, performance next, suffering a distant third  ;)

32T at the moment with 11-42

want to go oval but can't decide between 30T or 32T

For 29er

I don't have an interest in grinding at 65kph ....I want to climb to the start of the enduro stage comfortably and use my skill to gain speed.

30/32/30/32/30/32/30/32 ahhhhhh :cursing:
