Is anyone using road disc brakes at road races?

Cooked the brakes before and since then have had constant little issues popping up.  Braking is alright now after bleeding and replacing pads but the noise generated on those disks is enough to get me banned from the EU.  So on several discussions including the hub guess what would apparently resolve the issue? ... wait for it .... replace the disks.

Disks have about 4500 km on them.  My new roadbike with those crappy rim brakes have done close to 4000 km .... farkall problems.

This is the issue with these arguments.

NOBODY has said rim brakes are crappy, we ALL ride them or have in the recent past. But in todays world, apparently you cannot like something without disliking the other.

Rim brakes are not ***, discs are not ***.

Rim brakes are good, discs are just slightly gooder in some aspects.

WTF happened to critical thinking. This is not a Trump vs Hillary thing, you dont have to pick sides and defend the one to the death. There is merit in both!

Not sure what "cooked" the brakes means, but to remove the noise, if it wasn't there before (ie. frame / mount issue / resonance) then you need to do the following:

  • take discs off bike and clean properly with a disc cleaner or iso alc.
  • then lightly sand them (just braking surfaces) and then clean again.
  • take pads out of caliper (and I reckon issue is here) and also do proper soak / clean in ispropyl alc and sand sand sand and iso prop again.  (or disc brake cleaner).
  • Then when placing back into caliper, put a little (!!) grease on the piston contact area with the back of the pad.  Just becareful to NOT touch pad surface or rotor.
  • Loosen caliper bolts, pull lever and realign (unless pads are unevenly worn, then replace).
  • Do a few mega high-speed to stop stops without going over bars.
  • Have a beer.
  • Enjoy noise free riding.

NOW!  Before the ^%#ers above jump in and chime in that they "NEVER have to do anything like this with their crappy old 1940's road brakes that have cycled across China",  this 15min job is really VERY seldom done, and only when nothing else helps.   If you have the time I'll share a story of my Bianchi and a Campy set of brakes that screamed like it was giving birth with simultaneously having a cactus shoved up it's butt.

Well I am basing my statements on my experience and bought the new bike with rim brakes based on my experience.  Granted I am not a full time professional mechanic but my bikes are in better working order than they were when I used to take them to the LBS.

PS. Not sure if you saw I added a pic later to my post.

bro.... bro... I just can't sit here and watch you make these outrageous statements.

Using such common sense just ruins the early Friday thread. What on earth is wrong with you?! Have you no shame?!

You are either for it or against it.... the end. This is Bikehub in South Africa, not Switzerland!

mmm. I see what you're trying to do - you're trying to be rational (and doing a bloody good job, if I may so so). Next time, I hope you have the good fortune of others around you being rational and reasonable thinkers too. I suspect you'll have a jolly fruitful discussion Patch, and you and those around you will all benefit greatly. Unlike this conversation. Patch, I wish you all the very best in your future efforts.

In JHB we say bru, not bro.

Bru is much better and is the only way.

Or

You could buy rim brakes.......save all the above **** and time and use it to go train or chat to the family or watch TdF.

mmmmm.  Not the issue.

If it was clear as that.....some like Carbon, some don't.  Some do leather seats....some don't.

Point is.  Hate it or love it, you WILL have to buy it eventually.

I have already heard 2 importers of big brands say they are not bringing rim brakes to SA anymore because they need to swing the market.

You don't like the green dress....fine.....but don't take away the trusty jean pant.

That's just stupid and greedy to sell green dresses.

Look at the upside, there will be millions of really cheap top of the range rim brake bikes in the classifieds. Buy those.

Its like each time that I switch between my and my wife car, I have several accidents because of the difference in power.

Maybe its only a problem for pensioners.
