I’ve have two Thule’s on the roof and use all the time. Either for MTB’s or BMX’s. I always do the following. Because your can’t load the bikes in the garage, when I pull the car out I put my garage bench work chair in the parking space. Then, once I’ve closed the garage door I throw the remote into the passenger foot well where I can’t reach it easily.

Not a single incident [emoji41]

I prefer my platform rack.  Easier to load the bike.  No hassles with height.  Less fuel consumption.

BUT, on long gravel roads you get lots of fine dust on the drive train .... grinding the gears and chain ....

For these trips I use the Thule roof rack

I need a two-step ladder to load the bike.

Locking in place is EASY.

Fuel consumption is marginally higher.  With a head wind I do need to drop my speed a bit ....

I put my garage remote away when the bikes are on the roof .... the the real danger is with low entries along the trip !!  But you are constantly reminded of the bikes when the shadow passes you or is resting on the bonnet ....

At Augrabies we had to fill up petrol, my wife had to get out and guide me in to check if we would fit ....

BUT - after hundreds of kilometers of dirt roads the drive train on the bike was CLEAN !!!!

So I will continue to use the platform rack for tar trips like tomorrow, but for longer gravel trip the bike will go on the roof.

On Saturday I did a funride outside Worcestor, had to do 3,5km of gravel road to get to the starting point ....fine layer of dust all over the bike, on the platform rack behind the car.

I remember this discussion coming up on a US forum a few years ago and one gent relaying the story of how he got to his house, climbed out of the car to his manual garage door, unlocked and opened it, walked back to his car with the bikes on the roof and then proceeded to drive into the garage with the bikes still on the car. DOH!

My brother in law forgot his S-Works on his rack and killed it when entering the garage. Insurance was hesitant to pay, but eventually did. Collected his new bike, put it on the rack and forgot about it when entering the garage. Needles to say, insurance refused to pay

Haha! It's only a question when something like this happens to me, not a question of if something like this could happen to me.

I only use the roof rack as plan B when I have to tow a trailer as well, prefer the platform rack when possible. Must admit having a clean bike after riding dirt roads is a big +

I have the more basic and much cheaper Thule roof mount racks that clamp from the sides. They work very well too. I am usually in riding gear when I return to the garage so its easy to remember the bikes are up there. I used to have a note on the dash to remind me.

The trend towards high roof SUV vehicles makes them a bit of a hassle if you are a shorty. My wagon is  low slung so even my wife can manage at a push.

At 1,75 I must use a two step ladder to put the bike on the rack on the RAV4 ....  easy enough though.

So, after smashing my bike off the roof rack for a 3rd time ( I am happy to take any abuse on the chin) on my wife's car, I have come to the following conclusion

1) I think it is better to have a roof rack on my bakkie where I am higher and always notice the stupid height restriction poles in open parkings

2) In the lower car it is just not as noticeable or obvious that you are going under a height restriction

Each time, it is when I have been collected by my wife in her car when she has driven into the car park (with no issues), but smashed them going out now that the bike is on the roof.

Lets just say that once I get the car back from the panel beater, I will take the racks off.

Yet I am happy to keep them on my bakkie where I have carried bikes hundreds of times without an issue.

Anyone else experience the different "risk" based on car height.

Thule 598 ... initially skeptical about them but am convinced after 18 months that they are 100 percent secure.

Also had one mishap with no damage ... if i forget i deserve the pain.

3 Times, and each time equaled dented card roof and boot, broken bike rack and damage to bike.

Luckily no major damage to the frame or forks, just broken cables and shifters.
