Are you sure about the size, because this is a good buy and near you.

Almost 100% sure, based on the measurements that various bike manufacturers provide for pricing.

Looking at your current options, I can give you my advice.

Look at the BMC GF02, I bought one a while back for R20k on the Hub, brand new. 105, disc brake.... I thought it was going to be a odd bike, but holy moly, its become my most ridden bike by miles. Its fast enough to keep up with other roadies, but the bigger tyres can be tubeless converted and then JHB potholes are no stress at all.

Thanks - going to hopefully have a look at a roadmachine soon (105, disc).

and thanks for the bikemob suggestions, I'll take a look.

You getting commission? Will have to chat to Deon regarding this,  :whistling:

Please do, I want the commission!

Funny, a work colleague is looking for a 54, found a giant TCR, with Ultegra, carbon rims for a steal. Not at the above giant store unfortunately.

I'm buying one bike, whichever works out fit and budget wise.

Based on the replies in this thread though, I'm obviously a rarity in actually wanting to look at different bikes and make a choice. Most people apparently know exactly which bike they want when buying a new one.

Ha ha, reading some of the replies, tough crowd today, but don't sweat it. When I started cycling after a long layoff since school i went to a LBS. The assistant approached me and after telling him I'm looking for a bike he asked what kind of bike, i replied a blue one. That he could keep a straight face without laughing I can only assume I was not the first.

I have never had that experience but maybe that is because I don't "visit a number of shops" with no intention of spending money with all but one of them, yet demanding that they will all pull out the stops for me.

I'm sorry that's a bit ridiculous. Some people like to get an idea on actual pricing, not what's quoted on a website.

This is the issue with modern businesses - to provide a quote is not "pulling out all the stops", it is basic business 101 and if you can't be bothered to do so and stand by your pricing then don't expect my money to come your way.

Yep, that is apparent.

Having not ridden road bikes much, I have actually been relying on shops for some advice, apart from whatever investigations I'll do online.

The timing has been off, with a lot of shops seemingly inbetween their 2017 and 2018 stocks. So the shops haven't always been sure when they are getting their 2018s in, or at what price. Kind of difficult to buy, if the stores can't tell me when or home much the bike is going to be.

WELCOME to the Hub.

NO, I have not read all 5 pages ... pretty sure the same replies repeat .....  :whistling:   Just like mine will be repeat of some others ...

I was in your boat a few months back - except I was looking for a full suspension MTB ....  I had a rough idea of the price range, but no specific brand preferance.  I took a day and drove from the one shop to the other ....

shop 1 ... uhm ja .... shop might do better if their sales staff are not casuals ...

shop 2 - WOW !! blew my socks off !!  EXCELLENT advise !!  Though they were at the high end of my budget (for a decent frame and lower spec components)

shop 3 - pretty decent service, no GOOD service.  That which I liked was not in my size though .... search might have stopped right ....

shop 4 - clients that came in after me were serviced first .... (will get back to these later)

shop 5 - I had bought from them before, but they were low on stock and could not help me ....

shop 6 - same level of service as with shop 2 !    He actually listened to what I wanted, asked some questions, and got me to think about criteria I had not even considered.  then told me to test ride a specific model ..... made an EFT and that was it.  (same brand as the guys in shop 4 ...)

At no point did I play of one store against another, asking to "match a quote" ... IRKS me when some large store actually advertise "bring us your quotes, nobody will beat us" ... just give me the right price, dammit ....

Would I have bought the same bike if stop 1 was at shop 6 ?  Probably NOT.  I would have searched further, and returned in the afternoon to buy it.  and the final decision was not only the "value for money", but the "ride and feel" is what convinced me.

Could I have found the same bike cheaper else where ? ..... if I had done the "compare quotes" thing I might have saved a few rand,  but that is not my style ..... possibly because I have family in retail and hear the stories of people tapping store-staff for info, then buying online "because it is cheaper".

Sorry, none of this really helps you finding a ROAD bike.

If you were in the Cape I would have recommended the following stores:

Cycle4Life (sure Danie will assist you, but just not the same if you cant FEEL the bike)

GekoCycles

ChrisF - that was roughly my general experience and thoughts.

But thanks all - you've given me a couple of options to think about and some places to check out.

The timing between years and the small size required, has made it a bit more difficult to actually try all the bikes I wanted, but it'll eventually get there.

year models ..... uhm ja ....

the average cyclist is more vein than 21 year old blond bomb shell ......

"last year" is just oooo-so-last-year .....

and the suppliers just feed of this frenzy !!

the rest of us just enjoy the great specials this brings !!!

Whomever is caught with "old stock" when the new stock comes in has to seriously discount a perfectly good and brand new bike ..... no wonder they dont want to advertise the new stock is about the hit the show room floor in a few days.  They would rather sell you a 2017 bike at "full price".  My commute bike was bought this way - paid 11k for an 18k bike, including a few extras.  New bike was on the floor the next day.

IF you can wait a bit.  Test ride now, then play the waiting game and see the prices tumble as they move stock to make way for the new models .....

Unlikely any race categories, at least in the near future. Size probably a small/51/52cm.

Name brand not particularly important.

Budget sub-R35k.

Had been looking at a slightly more endurance options, than the more pure race-spec bikes.

At the moment, BMC, Trek have seemed like fairly decent price/bike points, primarily because of selling off 2017 stocks.

Both awesome bikes BMC currently having some "issues" with LBS that would stock it. And my experience of trying to get hold of a Trek that fit my requirements was no great (putting things very euphemisticall) pity because both offer awesome bikes in your price range. Cycle lab had a sale not to long ago on BMC SLR02 (2016 models) going for 25k

Hmm,

Not many folks ride small framed bikes. Its an unusual frame size. My ex wife was on small frames and they were as rare as rooster teeth. At the same time they are difficult to sell. So when i found a good one i could always do a deal. Got a Trek off Cyclelab on a year end sale with  ridiculous wheels included.

My 2 cents worth - bide your time and you will pick up a major deal especially on old stock as they arent easy to sell.

Put a search in to the classifieds with your ideal criteria and then sit back and wait for the bites. Some guy whose wife doesn't ride any  more will eventually sell you the bike that is two years old for a third of the price....
